In a race against time, and desperate to save themselves and all they hold dear, will their secrets prove more treacherous than the ominous floodwaters swallowing the historic city?

Dive into a world of lies and deceit, where nothing is as it seems on the surface…

The chapters of this breath taking blend of fiction and historical fact varied in length and alternated between the perspectives of the five, realistic human characters and the thoughts of the vengeful river as it brought damage, death and destruction to the streets, buildings and citizens of the historic city of Florence in Italy. Five individuals who each had their own issues, some had flaws, some harboured secrets both from their pasts and in the present day, a couple were unlikable and a couple I felt a lot of sympathy for. Five fictional strangers who through the power of this talented author found themselves caught up in the horror of the true life floods of 1966. It's a story that features examples of discrimination against women and Jews that were rife at that era in time, issues that unfortunately raise their ugly heads in the present day despite the fact that we now live in the 21st century. It's about stolen art, forgery, murder, theft, secrets, greed, survival acts of selfless bravery and courage. The river was portrayed as a character in its own rights, a raging torrent of mother nature tearing across the land, forging a path of destruction and killing everything in its path. A mesmerising blend of beauty, destruction, rage and devastation that was both horrifying and captivating in equal measures.

This is a intricately plotted, very well written, enthralling blend of fiction and historical fact that had me glued to my kindle and frantically turning the pages, totally captivated by the various character's unfolding stories. Many of the chapters ended on a cliff hanger giving the reader a very bad case of just one more chapter syndrome.I really really enjoyed this gripping story and would happily read more of this author's books in the future.
