In the chess game called life,we are sometimes not given much choice when it comes down to making the right move. It can be a gamble,a flip of the coin or a roll of a dice.Sometimes we get it right and sometimes we don't.
To Jessica Campbell, the choice was simple, she either took the room at number 4 Maven Place or returned back to her hometown of Chesterbury and that was definitely not a option. There was far too many ghosts there for her to be happy.
Everything was fine at first, the two female housemates Lauren and Sofie were friendly and welcoming,ok, the only male housemate Marcus was a bit grumpy and standoffish but she could live with that. But then she started receiving nasty emails and silent phone calls and strange things started happening in the house causing her feelings of paranoia and anxiety to build,pushing her towards breaking point.
Someone is playing mind games and messing with Jessie's already vulnerable brain. Has her past caught up with her or had moving into 4 Maven Place definitely been the wrong move.
Although the story is mainly told from Jessie's perspective, some chapters were also voiced from the perspectives of multiple characters. Jessie was a complex character towards whom I felt a lot of empathy because of her mental health issues,lack of trust and indicisiveness. I thought she was a very lonely character who was doing all she could to move on with her life but couldn't because of events from her past which she felt could jeopardise her future. But were those threats real or imaginary? I thought that Jessie was a fantastic character and so were Pamela and Juliette. I also liked two out of the three other housemates but was I right too or had i been cleverly manipulated into believing that they were trustworthy when they were actually like some other characters hiding their true identities behind a cleverly constructed masks.
The Wrong Move is a well written, enthralling tale of manipulation,deception,friendships, obsession and mental health issues that keeps the reader guessing and frantically turning the pages. The characters were relatable and realistic,there was some intense moments and a dramatic conclusion. I really enjoyed this debut thriller and look forward to reading more of this author's books in the future.
