BOOK DESCRIPTION
Peter Margetts was a successful property developer in Dubai when the city-state's economy collapsed sending his company into bankruptcy. Post-dated cheques he'd written to investors were worthless. Along with hundreds of other businessmen he was arrested under Dubai's draconian cheque laws and thrown into Central Jail with a life sentence. Locked up with hardened criminals from all over the world he struggled to survive in a world of drug warlords and mafia bosses. But Peter was no quitter and whilst making friends with gangsters, witnessing a murder and a firing-squad execution, he went on hunger strike to bring his plight to world attention. Peter's case was even raised in the British Parliament. Gripping and powerful, 'When's Daddy Coming Home?' is also brutally funny and a painful insight into the Dubai few know... or talk about.
This is the shocking true story of one man's nine year battle against the Dubai legal system who as far as I was concerned were using him to set an example to other people who planned on handling dud checks. But Peter was a innocent man who had been arrested and thrown into hell on earth due to no fault of his own. Only he wasn't handed the usual sentence of three years, nope, almost every time he was hailed back to court, they used one of the checks as a excuse to add another year onto his sentence. 42 checks meant 42 years that's more years than paedophiles, murderers and robbers received and no one, not even the British government were prepared to help him get his sentence reduced or even quashed. The way that this poor man was treated by the agencies and government officials who he turned to for help was absolutely shocking and yet throughout all the knockbacks, the collapse of his marriage and the terrible things that he witnessed whilst he was in prison, he somehow managed to retain his sanity and his wicked sense of humour. I am absolutely certain that I would have ended up more of a basket case than I already am if I was forced to spend so much time inside a tiny room with only restricted access to fresh air. I was really pleased that he was able to make some really good friends within the prison and that despite the conditions and terrible situation that he was forced to live in, there was also some light hearted moments that broke up the daily monotony of prison life.
This author's account of his nine years of hell is a perfect example of the one rule for one, one rule for another culture that has infected not only Dubai but the whole of modern day society worldwide. His words cause the reader to experience a wide range of emotion you would have to have a heart of stone of you didn't feel some sympathy for the poor man. This was a very enlightening, fascinating read and I would happily recommend it to any fans of true crime and the tv series Banged Up Abroad. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the reader for sharing his story and to wish him the best of luck for the future.
