BLOG TOUR, BOOK REVIEW - The Punishment by Paul Clayton

                                                                 BOOK DESCRIPTION

When ex-soap star Daniel Maple finds himself down on his luck and out of work, a chance meeting in a nightclub with an attractive young man provides an introduction to a world of crime. It’s not long before Daniel finds himself having to deal with corpses, a murderous undertaker, and an unseen stalker hellbent on revenge. A whirlwind of exploding crematoriums, car chases, and dark childhood mistakes come together on the night of a live soft soap opera broadcast in front of the nation.

This gripping thriller is written in chapters that alternated between Back Story, Action and Subtext and is narrated almost entirely from Daniel's perspective. The back story was set in the past and covered the story of a lonely, abused young boy who witnessed something in the woods that he really shouldn't have understood at his young age. They also covered the consequences of his actions and what happened afterwards. The action parts were action packed and my favourite parts of the story, these parts followed Daniel as he made one stupid decision after another and found him caught up in numerous life threatening situations. I really liked adult Daniel, he had a wicked sense of humour despite the situations that he found himself in and made me laugh out loud a number of times. Sure, he had his flaws, but.....hey, who doesnt, that just made him more human and realistic. I really liked Daniel's flamboyant friend Grayson, I thought he was a fantastic character, I also liked Max, Rosie and Ayshea. The subtext chapters were voiced from the perspective of Daniel's antagonist as they meticulously carried out their plan of murder and carnage. These chapters were also narrated by the innocent and also not so innocent characters who found themselves part of the killer's plans.

This is a well written, fast paced, rip roaring thrill ride that rockets along faster than a roller coaster. The author's story pulls the reader in, pinning you to your reading chair and leaving you breathless until you reach the end of the ride and you are finally able to breath again. The Punishment is a action packed thriller that is perfect for fans of Simon Kernick, Richard Parker and Tom Bale. A very enjoyable read and very highly recommended.
