BOOK DESCRIPTION
One woman’s quest for revenge unearths a fatal secret from her past.
Astrid Jensen holds one man responsible for her mother’s suicide, and she’ll do whatever’s necessary to get close to Daniel Holst and destroy his life – even if it means sleeping with him to gain his trust. Astrid knows he’s not who he pretends to be. But before she can reveal his dark secret, people from her mother’s past start turning up dead, and it looks like she and Daniel are next. In order to survive, she might have to put her trust in the man she has hated for so long.
Daniel Holst has worked hard to climb into Norway’s most elite and glamorous circles, and he’s not about to let any woman bring him down. But when a psychopathic killer starts murdering people from his shadowy past, he discovers that the only person who might be able to save him is the woman who wants to destroy him.
As Astrid digs deeper into her past, she uncovers secrets long buried and realizes everything she once believed is based on lies. What began as a quest to avenge her mother’s death becomes a desperate struggle for survival and leads to the truth about what happened one fatal night ten years ago—and the surprising mastermind behind the most recent murders.
Although it is narrated from the perspectives of numerous characters, this gripping page turner is mainly voiced by Daniel, Astrid and Daniel's best friend Joel. All three of them were vivid individuals who each had their own individual flaws and hidden secrets. I thought that the way that the author manipulated my opinions of the characters was very clever, making me think one thing and then gradually revealing that first impressions can often be misleading and that I really should get to know the characters properly before I pass judgement. This is not a police procedural but one of the characters was a Detective Morten Knudsen who was in charge of the investigation into the murder of a man who was found floating in the river, not very far from where Daniel and Joel worked. I had mixed feelings about him when he was first introduced into the story but I eventually found myself thinking he was a very likeable character. The other characters were a mixed bag of diverse individuals, many of whom were untrustworthy, had hidden secrets and were not very likeable.
They say that our pasts help shape who we are but what if bad things that happened in our pasts are having a detrimental effect on our lives in the present day. This gripping page turner is a story about blame, abuse, revenge, family, learning from the mistakes of the past and being able to move on into a brighter future. It's fast paced, has some unexpected twists and turns, keeps the reader guessing and glued to your kindle. There is a atmosphere permeating the pages that is as chilling as the snow falling around the isolated cabins that feature in this gripping thriller. The story builds in intensity as the threads are pulled together and the story slips and slides towards its breath taking conclusion. I really enjoyed this enthralling story and would happily read more of this author's books in the future.
