BLOGTOUR, BOOK REVIEW - Adonias Low by D.A.Watson

                                                                     BOOK SYNOPSIS

Murder. Robbery. Kidnapping.

Welcome to Napa Valley, California, 1891.

To lawmen and bad men alike, The Low Man is a ghost story. The most feared bounty hunter to ever walk the territories. Whispered to be a Native American shapeshifter, a renegade Pinkerton detective, or the Bible quoting son of a mad preacher. No one knows for sure. He’s a spectre outlaws scare each other with around campfires.

Adonias Lowe lives in the highlands of Napa Valley with his children , scratching a hard living as a farmer and occasional wagon guard.

When a wealthy gin baron hires him to see a valuable shipment safely to San Francisco, the opportunity comes just in time to keep the family afloat. But when the job turns into a massacre and his daughter is abducted by a deviant killer,

Adonias is forced into a violent reckoning that will awaken a darkness he’s long tried to bury. As the corpses mount up, a dying sheriff tries to make sense of the madness, scalp hunters saddle up and ride for blood, fame and riches, and the local Wailaki are coming down from the hills, singing war songs of the Lost White Brother.

Welcome to Napa Valley, California. Where fruit grows thick on the vine, and blood runs deep.

Set in America in 1891, this authentically dark and brutal tale is written from the perspectives of a multitude of vivid characters. Adonias Lowe has been a single parent since the death of his beloved wife Sarah, who died giving birth to their twins Carolina and Travis who are now fifteen years old. Life on their ranch was a daily battle of balancing the books, feeding the animals and trying to repair the never ending list of damages that were scattered around the property. So when a local business man offers Adonias the opportunity to earn a substantial amount of money, despite his reservations, the devoted father jumps at the chance to make life a bit easier for his family. The twins also had concerns about their father going away, whenever Adonias had returned home from previous trips, for a while afterwards he had been sullen and distant, nothing like the loving father he had been before he had left. Little did they realise how prophetic their various concerns would turn out to be because, whilst Adonias is away, the job goes badly wrong and when he eventually manages to return home, he discovers that Carolina has been kidnapped by a twisted, narcissistic killer. Adonias soon finds himself a fugitive who is wanted for murder, a situation that is made far more serious and deadly by the fact that he is a 'half-blood' and viewed as nothing more than a savage by the white men who are hunting for him. After recruiting the help of the Wailaki Tribe, Adonias sets out to reap revenge on his various enemies and find his missing daughter. In a land that is ruled by bullying, greed, intimidation and violence, where no matter what your age is, no one is safe, the body count will rise, blood will flow and the air will be filled with the sounds of screams, explosions and gun fire. But, when the smoke clears, who will be left standing? Is Carolina still alive and if she is then how much is Adonias prepared to sacrifice to ensure his beloved daughter's freedom?

Adonias Low is a action packed story throughout which the author doesn't shy away from the violence, brutality, language and prejudices of the era in which his story is set. It's very well written, intense and at times uncomfortable to read with a plot that covers a number of issues including rape, torture and invest (these issues are only implied and not overly graphic) The author's descriptions of the various settings and characterisation of the individuals who appear during the story are vivid and realistic and there is a authentic vibe to the events that take place as the action unfolds. I would gladly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading or watching gripping, realistic Western adventures.
