BOOK SYNOPSIS
Harmony House has a voyeur. Someone with hidden cameras throughout the building. The residents are unaware they’re being watched, especially the ones up to no good.
I spy with my little eye, someone is going to die…
When people return home from a short break or holiday on the coast, their thoughts are generally full of happy memories of a relaxing time along with all the grains of sand that have managed to conceal themselves within their luggage, the odd jellyfish sting and bad case of sunburn. Sophie Walter's decision to spend a month at Harmony House in the suburb of Southbourne near Bournemouth,Dorset would result in her becoming the pawn in the cruel and twisted mind games of a narcissistic puppet master. Someone who was determined to make Sophie bend to their will or they would ultimately break her spirit and possibly end her life.Would Sophie be able to figure out the multiple secrets that were hiding within the walls of the eight luxury apartments, retain her sanity and return home to her beloved husband Ben? Or was she destined to be added to the number of lost and damaged souls who had lost their lives due to knowing too much information about the lives of others?
The chapters of this intense, spine chilling game of cat and mouse alternate between the perspectives of Sophie and the sinister, mysterious Watcher whose identity isn't revealed until the very end of the story. Sophie was a complex character and as the story unfolded, I was never absolutely certain about the trustworthiness or reliability of her character or version of events. I loved her interactions with her best friend Emma, Stanley the seagull and poor, troubled Tobias who was one of my favourite characters (but was he actually the watcher?) Sophie had some admirable character traits but there was also a number of times when I found her behaviour frustrating and felt like reaching into my kindle and shaking some sense into her. Why, despite insisting how much she loved and missed Ben did she insist of poking her nose into the lives of the various other residents of Harmony House instead of returning home and sorting out the issues within her own marriage? But,then again, if she had returned home then that would have been the end of the story...or would it? Was Ben the adoring husband he appeared to be? And what about Emma? Could she really be trusted or did she know more about Sophie's ordeal that she was letting on?
We learnt about the lives of the eclectic mix of realistic characters and personalities through the observations of both Sophie and the Watcher, there was Adam ( the caretaker) Tobias (the troubled nerd) Zara ( the spoiled princess) Rory (the sleaze bag) Una (the cat lady) Aurora and Federico (the volatile Italians) and Iris (the quiet loner) They each had their own personal issues and hidden secrets and as you find with many groups of people, some were more likeable than others but which one of them could have been the Watcher? The author cleverly imbued each of the characters who were currently residing in Harmony House with a aura's of mistrust and suspicion and I had each one of them pegged as the Watcher as the captivating story unfolded.
Interspersed throughout the story was extracts from the diary of a character called Louise Penrose which revealed that she had been subjected to a terrifying ordeal that was almost identical to the one that Sophie was currently being subjected to. But what had happened to Louise? Who was sending the extracts to Sophie and Why? Where they meant to be a threat or a warning?
OMFG, wow, just wow and wow again. This is a extremely well written, cleverly and intricately plotted, spine chilling, atmospheric thriller that is loaded with red herrings and has more twists and turns than a roller coaster. The enthralling story is written in short and snappy chapters which give the reader a very bad case of just one more chapter syndrome. The plot covers a number of realistic and relatable issues including miscarriage, mental health and different aspects of abuse, issues which the author has written about with care and sensitivity whilst avoiding the story becoming overly graphic. I would love to watch a movie or tv adaptation of this addictive thriller and would gladly award it far more than five stars if I could. This is definitely going to be one of my favourite reads of this year and is very very highly recommended by little old me.
