After the death of the six year old boy that she is looking after and with no memory of what happened Sophie goes on the run.She gets herself a new identity and a new life with a man that she met online but Sophie is not the only one who is keeping secrets.
To be honest when I first started reading this book I struggled to connect with the story and the Sophie character and gave up on the book but the other day I decided to give it a second chance.I admit that although I still found it difficult to connect to either of the characters it was better than I first expected ,the cat and mouse game between Sophie and her tormentor was quite gripping and parts of the story were quite dark at times but there was also parts of the story that really irritated me,it's very hard to explain why without giving too much away.I didn't understand why Sophie didn't tell her first Husband about what was happening to her and Sophie`s tormentor seemed to be able to do whatever they wanted without once running the risk of being caught which really did get irritating after a while. Her tormentor was also very egotistical and came across like a villain from a badly acted b movie.
The first part of the story is told in the present tense by Sophie,Frantz`s part is set in the past and then the two stories come together and are told in alternating points of view between Sophie and Frantz. You don't find out why Sophie is being stalked and tormented until towards the end of the book which made a nice change and there is a shocking twist at the end which I didn't see coming. It's quite a good book and I did eventually enjoy reading it,I just found certain character traits annoying.
Many thanks to Quercus books for an ARC of this book via netgalley
