The Devil's Work by Mark Edwards
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Sophie Greenwood has just taken the job that she has dreamed of getting since she was a child,a position at Jackdaw Books, one of the UK`s most successful children's publishers.Sophie is nervous but can't wait to return to work after staying at home for four years raising her young daughter Daisy but from her very first day she has the feeling that she has made a big mistake, that something is very wrong at Jackdaw Books. As the days go by Sophie and her husband Guy are gradually drawn into a living nightmare that threatens to tear their already fragile marriage apart.Sophie must fight to keep her family safe and find out what is going on at Jackdaw Books but in doing so she might be forced to reveal secrets that she has locked away for years.
The story is narrated by Sophie and flips back and forth between 1999-2000 when Sophie was at university and 2015 when she starts her job at Jackdaw and is married to Guy.I found the chapters set in 2015 the most interesting and intriguing as you follow Sophies investigation into what is going on and you find out if she is correct about who she thinks is involved.
To be honest,I struggled to make any connection or feel any sympathy with Sophie,I could understand why some of the other characters thought she came across as a bit of a snob and her total obsession with one of the other characters, without having any real proof that they were involved really got irritating after a while.
As you can expect from a Mark Edwards book, there is a couple of deeply twisted characters,a couple of truly dark moments and plenty of twists plus a few zombies. The story of who and why Sophie and her family are being terrorised is intreguing and its nice that some of the characters from The Magpies are mentioned.I just think my lack of connection with Sophie and my irritation with a couple of other characters plus the way things ended with Sophie and Guy was just too happily ever after for me led to me not enjoying this book as much as I wanted too and definitely not as much as I enjoyed Follow You Home.
Thanks to publishers Thomas & Mercer for a ARC of this book via netgalley in exchange for a honest review.
