The Girl from the Sea by Shalini Boland
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
A woman is found washed up on a beach in Dorset and rushed to hospital where it is discovered that she is suffering from amnesia and has no idea who she is and what happened to her before she was found. After a appeal is put out by the police a man comes forward and claims that he is her boyfriend and that her name is Mia Jones. As Mia struggles with her amnesia and tries to put her life back together she doesn't know who she can trust and if the people around her are being completely honest with her.
It must be really terrifying to not recognize your own face and to have to rely on other people to tell you about events that happened in your past. The amnesia part of the story was obviously well researched and did add a bit of intregue to the story but I struggled to feel any sympathy for Mia who came across as really annoying, whiney and a total cow.As a reader I like to feel some connection to at least one character and even more so if they are the main character and the only one who is telling the story but I felt no connection whatsoever with Mia.It didn't help that all the male characters seemed to go out of their way to hug and comfort her,it was just so frustrating, unbelievable and unrealistic.
I was drawn to this book by the eye catching, dramatic cover and the intreguing synopsis but to be honest I was very disappointed with some elements of the story and I struggled to finish the book. The story started off well but then it got all soppy and romantic which slowed the pace right down and I began to lose interest in the story,I don't read thrillers so I can read about characters going to the pub or out for a picnic. The pace picked up towards the end but nothing unexpected happened and I found the twists a bit predictable. There were events in the story that were not explained properly and although I did enjoy some parts of the book I didn't feel any disappointment when I finished it which is a shame because I had been looking forward to reading it due to the positive reviews I had seen online.
Many thanks to Adrenaline books for a arc of this book via netgalley in exchange for a honest review.
