Her Last Breath by J.A. Schneider
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Although this is the second book in the Kerri Blasco series it can be read and enjoyed as a stand alone.
Mari Gill wakes up in a strange room, she is covered in blood and lying next to a dead man with a knife protruding from his chest. The shock and fear of the situation causes Mari to have a massive asthma attack and she is just about to pass out when she is rescued by a mysterious stranger who saves her life and calls the emergency services.Unfortunately for Mari because she was found in a room with a dead body and says she has no memory of what happened after 10pm the previous night most of the police decide that she is their number one suspect.Fortunately for Mari she does have someone who believes she is innocent, tough, stubborn Detective Kerri Blasco believes that the case is not as open and shut as her fellow officers think and is prepared to go all out to prove that her trusty gut feelings are right.
Kerri Blasco is fast becoming one of my favourite fictional detectives, she is very stubborn and never gives up no matter how many brick walls and dead ends she encounters during a investigation.I love the relationship between Kerri and her partner/boss/lover Alex Brand,I'm not usually a fan of romances in thrillers but the romance elements are not overdone nor do they drag on for pages and pages which is when I start to lose interest in a story.
Mari is a complex character and her feelings of anxiety, fear and confusion are very believable and realistic as she struggles with her lost memories, not knowing who she can trust and is pulled back and forth between her ex husband Ted Curry who just happens to be a top notch lawyer and her mysterious rescuer.
The story is fast paced and has loads of twists,I was hooked from the first sentence.I admit I did work out who was behind Mari`s predicament but it didn't spoil my enjoyment of the story and I am looking forward to finding out what mystery Kerri is going to find herself investigating in book 3
Many thanks to RGS Media for a arc of this book via netgalley in exchange for a honest review.
