BLOG TOUR REVIEW
I was drawn to this book by the dramatic cover and intreguing sounding synopsis.Public Relations expert Kay Christie is shocked when she realises that she knows the identity of a dead body that has been found floating in London`s Royal Albert Dock. As Kay's life spirals out of control she starts to discover that the people she loves may be harbouring secrets and could know something about the fate of a missing girl. It sounded really good and I was looking forward to curling up in my comfy chair and enjoying a gripping thriller.Unfortunately I found myself struggling to get through the book and almost gave up a number of times. It took until page 201 out of 268 for the story to actually get going. A lot of the story was about Kay lusting after Polly the Dectective and no,I am not homophobic,as long as a character is not a child abuser then I don't care what their sexual orientation is. I didn't care that Kay was a lesbian,it actually was a refreshing change having a lesbian as the main protagonist. My issue was that in my opinion it took far too long for the story to grab my attention and by the time it did,I honestly didn't care,I just wanted it to be over. None of the characters had any redeemable qualities and were all mostly very selfish and unlikable.I didn't like Kay very much, she was very unpleasant, selfish, snappy and thoughtless. She was also very indecisive, she insisted that she wanted to know the truth about what was going on and then refused to believe everything that she was told. She did redeem herself a little during the intense confrontation towards the end of the book but not enough to make me actually care about her character.I also worked out who the villain of the story was quite early in the story,i hoped I was wrong but was rather disappointed when it turned out that I was right.
The book does have some good qualities,it's well written, has a couple of intense, gripping scenes and a few unexpected twists. There was also a couple of realistic, shocking scenes that highlight the mind set and behaviour of some men towards lesbians. Its was just far too slow and drawn out for this readers liking. We all have different opinions on the books that we read,I'm sure other readers will enjoy this book a lot more than I did.
