Blog Tour - Book Excerpt : Culmfield Cuckoo by

                                                                 BOOK BLURB

When Billy reaches out to help, her kindness brings many changes which threaten hopes, homes, and even the people she loves the most.

Who is the Culmfield Cuckoo? Will they help Billy get her life back? Or is the Cuckoo the cause of everything that is going wrong? Who is telling the truth?

“… Jessie helped me in silence to make up a bed, then I showed them the bathroom and left.
There were no explanations, other than they were both tired and we could talk this morning.
‘I found her in her bedroom yesterday, packing a suitcase.’ Jessie’s bottom lip quivers so much, I struggle to hear.
  ‘Sorry?’ I ask.
‘Mary, she’d booked a taxi and she was about to run away from home, so I made her agree I could go with her. She won’t tell me what’s wrong.’ Jessie stops.
  Minutes seem to pass.
Our Border terrier, Crinkle, is sitting by Jessie’s feet and the dog starts scratching under her chin, so violently and noisily, that I wonder if she is feeling uncomfortable too.
‘What about your sons, Jessie? What about Arthur, Mikey and little Max?’ I ask.
She looks up at me, fixing her eyes on mine. ‘I couldn’t let Mary go on her own. She was mad as hell.’
‘But she won’t tell you why she wanted to leave?’
  ‘No.’
‘Where was Michael when you left?’ I check quickly, reluctant to mention his name, assuming he must be on a business trip, but then I reconsider. Was he out riding? I know he is a man of routine; when I lived at Culmfield, he and I used to ride every Saturday morning, taking our horses around the boundary of the six-thousand-acre estate, always the same route. For a moment, the memory makes me feel peaceful; I used to look forward to our rides. Back then there was nothing between us, just friendly companions relishing the ever-changing seasons and the beauty of the place; the fallow deer herd and the River Culm that meandered through the grounds.
  ‘Paintball,’ she coughs.
  ‘Paintball?’
‘Yes.’ Jessie scoops up Wallace, the fat ginger cat, holding on to him like a comfort cushion. ‘Michael and the boys were at a paintball birthday party, so I left a note, saying we will be back tomorrow night.’
I picture him screwing up her note in his fist. ‘Jessie, did you say where you were going?’
  She shakes her head.
‘Do you want to ring him?’ I ask.
‘No, he’ll fetch us back!’ Her eyes widen.
‘Okay, okay.’ I try to sound soothing.
Jessie doesn’t seem reassured. She tells me, ‘I have to find out why Mary was running away. I am worried it’s something he’s done.’
‘He would never hurt Mary?’ I frown.
‘No, I don’t think he has.’ Jessie lifts her shoulders. ‘Mary says he hasn’t hurt her, but I’m unsure. Michael may have caused her to leave. I really don’t know.’
I reach out to touch her hand, and she doesn’t pull away. As she stares into my eyes, a tiny spark ignites inside me; a small hope that we might be friends again one day…”
