BLOG TOUR,BOOK REVIEW - The Missing Woman by Georgina Cross

                                                                  BOOK DESCRIPTION

They live in the big houses on the pretty street. Those other women, as we call them. And to think I used to want to be like them, to have their money and happiness, to live and laugh and play like them. Not any more.

It’s the fourth of July and the whole town is gathered at the local pool. Through the sweltering afternoon, we single mothers don’t mix with the other women––the ones with the perfect lives and happy marriages. Women like Sabine Miller. But when Sabine shoots me a desperate look across the water and suddenly disappears, my blood runs cold…

Running to the back gate, all I find is a silver charm bracelet she dropped on her way out. I convince myself I’m imagining things until Sabine’s husband Mark appears. When he realizes she’s missing, he phones the cops straight away. “Someone has been threatening Sabine,” he says. “Now they’ve kidnapped her.”

Hours later, I wish I’d run faster. The whole town is searching the streets, calling Sabine’s name over and over. On the TV, Mark is begging for someone to bring his wife home.

The truth is, I was the last person to see her alive––and it’s killing me inside. Now the cops are at my door asking questions. I’m terrified they’ll find out what happened years ago between me and Sabine. Something I’ve never told anyone.

But I need to tell someone. Can you keep a secret?

Welcome to Green Cove,a community that is situated at the base of the Appalachian Mountains and where the rich and beautiful with their lavish houses are separated from the not so wealthy by a golf course and a nature reserve. Our main character and narrator of this gripping thriller Erica had at one time wanted to be able to mingle amongst the likes of Sabine Miller and her beautiful friends Monica and Carol but those desires swiftly change when Sabine mysteriously disappears. After Erica and her best friend Tish find themselves caught up in the investigation, it gradually becomes apparent that life isn't always greener on the other side. Their apparently safe and secure neighbourhood is a hot bed of secrets, lies and deceit but what is the truth behind Sabine's disappearance? As is common in this age of social media, certain members of the community have their own opinions and are not shy about sharing them on the community Facebook Group Post where they had the opportunity to pass judgement without fear of recriminations. Almost every character in this story was harbouring some sort of secret including Erica herself and I can't honestly say that I thought any of the characters were very likeable although I did feel a bit of sympathy for Sabine once the truth about her situation was revealed. I also felt some empathy for younger Erica during the chapters that were set twenty five years in the past.

After opening with a intense prologue the story is then quite a slow burner until you reach the last quarter of the book where it becomes a full blown, intense psychological thriller. The plot held my attention throughout the story which contains some unexpected twists and turns and some clever reader manipulation by the author. Georgina Cross is a very talented author and I look forward to reading many more of her books in the future.
