BLOG TOUR, BOOK REVIEW - Girl A by Dan Scottow

                                                                 BOOK DESCRIPTION

Someone thinks they know who she is… and what she did.

But she insists it’s a mistake.

All Beth has ever wanted is a quiet life for her and her family. And that is what she has, until one evening a note is pushed through the door, with two words scrawled in menacing black ink; Found you.

As Beth’s neatly crafted life begins to unravel, an unseen menace torments her and those she loves. But who’s behind the threats?

Somebody is out to get Beth, but do they have the right woman?

Beth faces losing everything, and there is far more at stake than just her marriage…

The murder of a innocent child is a horrific, senseless but unfortunately far too common crime. What fortunately isn't so common is the murder of a child by other children. There has been a few cases scattered throughout history, the memorable in recent history being the shocking torture and murder of little Jamie Bulger back in early 1993. All these years later many people are still struggling to understand what would cause two young boys to entice a innocent young boy away from his mother and commit such a horrific crime. And then, there is also the age old debate, should some killers be given new identities when they have served their sentence and just be able to carry on with their lives considering the fact that they took that right away from their victim. Are we supposed to feel sympathy for the killer when someone uncovers their identity and takes upon themselves to make the killer's life a living nightmare?

This is the enthralling story of Beth, her husband Charlie, their teenage son Peter and younger daughter Daisy and how the arrival of a note consisting of just two words plunges their perfect lives into a living nightmare. As the champaign of hate intensified it became apparent that someone believed that Beth was actually Kitty Briscoe. Back in 1985, Kitty and her friend Kieran Taylor had enticed two year old Billy Noakes away from his mother, taken him into some local woods where they had tortured and killed him. Kieran had been found guilty and sent to prison but Kitty had been found not guilty. Many people, including the lead detective on the case believed that Kitty had literally got away with murder. And now the past appears to have caught up with the young killer. But was Beth's mysterious stalker right about her true identity? How far where they prepared to go in their quest to torment Beth and her family? If Beth is a innocent as she insists, then why does refuse to report the escalating incidents to the police? Why does Vicki, the new girl at Beth's office appear to be obsessed with Beth?

Interspersed throughout the book was chapters that slipped back in time and have the reader a insight into Kitty's horrific childhood, her interactions with Kieran and her alcoholic father and the effects that the notorious crime had on her family after the trial. Kitty's backstory brought the nature v's nurture debate into play, the unanswered question of, is a child born evil or is their actions and behaviour preordained by their DNA.

Girl A is a intricately plotted, very well written thriller that draws the reader in with a heart breaking opening prologue and keeps you guessing as the drama, trials and tribulations of the realistic characters unfolded before your captivated eyes. The murder of a child is a shocking crime and the author has written about the shocking events of Billy's fate with care, sensitivity and without being overly sensationalistic. It's a very addictive read that has a genuinely, spine chilling conclusion and would raise some interesting discussions if it was read by a book group. I really really enjoyed this fast paced thriller, very very highly recommended.
