BLOG TOUR, BOOK REVIEW - Beneath Black Water River ( Detective Kay Sharp #2) by Leslie Wolfe

                                                                 BOOK DESCRIPTION

She looked alive, her hair drifting freely in the water, her red lips gently parted, as if to let her final breath escape. A small locket floated by her face, attached to her neck with a silver chain…

When Detective Kay Sharp first left Mount Chester—population 3,823—in her rear-view mirror, she promised never to look back. The town only contained bad memories and dark secrets. But when a brutal crime surfaces, she finds herself home once more, and this time she’s not going anywhere.

Kay is called to Blackwater River, where the body of a seventeen-year-old girl has been found. Surrounded by snowy peaks and a forest alive with the colors of fall, the victim floats in the water, a hand-carved locket around her neck.

The locket seems strangely familiar. Digging into cold cases, Kay discovers that three-year-old Rose Harrelson was wearing it when she vanished fourteen years ago. In the middle of the night, the little girl’s bedroom—with Mickey Mouse on the wall and a hanging baby mobile—was suddenly empty. The unsolved case still haunts the town.

But the teenager they have found has been dead for only a few hours. If the girl in the river is Rose, where has she been? Who has been hiding her all these years? Kay knows she must solve the kidnapping in order to untangle the mystery of the dead body.

Then Kay receives a shocking call. The dead girl has been identified—and she’s not Rose. So why is she wearing the locket, and what happened to the missing child from all those years ago? As Kay unearths a web of lies and deceit spun for decades, the close-knit community will never be the same. And Kay will find herself facing a truly terrifying killer…

A totally gripping page-turner that should come with a health warning! Be warned: you’ll lose sleep and your heart will race like crazy as you read twist after twist. Perfect for fans of Lisa Regan, Robert Dugoni and Kendra Elliot.

The discovery of the body of a seventeen year old girl in a cafe behind the waterfall at stunning Blackwater River launches Ex FBI profiler turned detective Kay Sharp and her partner detective Elliot Young into a  frustrating and complex investigation where every lead that they uncover appears to culminate in a dead end. They think they have finally made a breakthrough in the case when the body is identified as belonging to Rose Harrelson who disappeared from her bedroom fourteen years ago when she was just three years old. But when it transpired that the usually very competent and reliable Dr Whitmore appears to have made a shocking mistake, the detectives find themselves back at square one. The department is a laughing stoke and Sheriff Logan orders Kay to figure out how the hell the mistake happened and the identity of the dead young girl. A investigation that will lead to some sickening revelations and find Kay coming into contact with some very cunning, twisted characters. Individuals who are not happy that Kay is digging into their lives and are prepared to do whatever it takes to stop their dark secrets from being uncovered.

Meanwhile, Elliot is ordered to investigate the disappearance of teenager Kirsten who had run away from home after a terrifying encounter with her step father's obnoxious mates. We follow his investigation and Kirsten's journey after she runs away and starts hitchhiking her way to San Francisco, her encounters with the good and bad sides of human nature and how she eventually finds herself trapped in another living nightmare. Will Elliot be able to uncover her whereabouts before time runs out? Who was the body in the cave? Why was the body wearing Rose's necklace? What happened to Rose all those years ago?

The chapters are voiced from the perspectives of numerous, well rounded characters including Kay, Elliot, Kirsten and a unknown person who is searching for someone called Mira, his first and never forgotten first love.

Written in short, snappy chapters, this is a extremely well written, intricately plotted, fast paced, addictive thriller that had me hooked in, kept me guessing and glued to my kindle from the first page. The author cleverly pulls together the various threads threads of the plot together until all the dark truths are revealed in all their shocking glory. The story is packed full of twists and turns, red herrings and has a cat of vivid, realistic individuals. Although this is the second book in the series it can be read and enjoyed as a standalone. I really, really enjoyed this suspenseful and intense thriller and I look forward to reading many more of Kay and Elliot's investigations in the future.
