The vast majority of this intense and atmospheric thriller is narrated from the alternating perspectives of Kate Harding and Joel White. Apart from a dental appointment,there isn't many life experiences that are more daunting or nerve racking than being interviewed for a new job. Kate had been suffering from overwhelming feelings of self doubt long before she had arrived at the incredible, glass fronted, high-rise building situated at 55 Ludgate Hill where she was due to be interviewed for a PR position at Edge Communications. In the past she had once had a very successful career but a number of life changing events had destroyed her confidence and resulted in her very often feeling as if she was in danger of spiralling out of control. Despite Kate's doubts and after a lot of persuasion from her recruitment agent Maggie, she was prepared to subject herself to the interview because Kate felt that it might - or might not - change everything. Little did Kate realise just how prophetic her thoughts would become but not in a good way. Once she had met Joel and recovered from the shock that she was going to be interviewed by him and not the person Kate had been informed would be conducting her interview everything initially appeared to be going well. That was until Joel's questions suddenly became personal and intrusive, from that point onwards what was supposed to be a simple job interview suddenly turned into a desperate battle for her survival. Kate found herself trapped on the thirteenth floor of a deserted building with no way of summoning help and caught in a cat and mouse chase with a cunning,cold blooded killer. The question was,why had Kate been been targeted? What did Joel want from Kate? Why did Joel insist on asking Kate questions about her husband Mark? Was Joel the puppet master or was he simply a puppet who was under the control of one or more unknown individuals?
I loved the author's characterisation of Kate, her conflicting emotions and feelings of fear and terror were vivid and realistic. She was brave, feisty, stubborn, highly intelligent but she also had a vulnerable side to her character. I loved her close relationship with her brother Luke who also voiced a number of chapters that were scattered throughout the story. Joel was a realistic blend of charming nice guy and merciless killer, he had as much empathy for Kate's obvious emotional distress as a good person from The Invasion Of The Body Snatchers. But as time passed he gradually discovered that spending time with Kate began to strangely affect his abilities to perform him job to his usual high standards. Joel was a genuinely sinister individual which is exactly what you expect from the apparent villian of a story but there was one particular aspect of his character that seriously began to grate on my nerves and that was his insistence of constantly referring to Kate by her first name during every conversation between the two characters. I know that was a part of his method for getting inside his current victim's head but I also found him getting inside my head and causing me to feel more than a tiny bit frustrated with his repetitive behaviour.
Interspersed throughout the story was chapters that were set in the past and have the reader a insight into the relationship between Kate and Mark but what how did these parts of the story fit into events that were unfolding in the present day?
The Interview is one hell of a fast paced,action packed thriller that is written in short,snappy chapters which give the reader a very bad case of just one more chapter syndrome. The setting for the story and the way that everything takes place over a short period of time ramps up the atmosphere and intensity that permeates a cast majority of the pages. Although this is a work of fiction, the plot does contain references to real life events and there is a chilling and terrifying vibe of reality to certain aspects of the story. I think this book would be a thrilling,gripping watch if it was adapted for tv or a movie. This is the first book that I have read that was written by this author and it most definitely will not be my last. A breath taking, edge of your seat, enthralling read that is very very highly recommended by little old me.
