BLOGTOUR, BOOK REVIEW - None by Robin Roughley

                                                                    BOOK SYNOPSIS

Ruben is a successful salesman.

Roz hates her boring admin job.

Ruben owns his own home.

Roz still lives with her nasty mum and dad.

One is a serial killer, the other desperate to learn the trade.

When high-school misfits Ruben Jones and Roz Smith’s paths cross later in life, they see something in the other no one else has and they team up to form a friendship based on the one thing they have in common – murder.

Ruben owned his own home which he shared with his hamster Mrs Bumph (she hadn't originally been his pet but that was another story) He was a successful salesman who lived his life through order and routine. He always adhered to the highway code and the speed limit and he never ate more than forty two peas, two potatoes and two sausages or fish fingers for his evening meal. In Ruben's mind, black was black and white was white, everything he said was blunt and honest and he didn't give a damn if his reply hurt someone's feelings. Oh, and he was a cunning serial killer who was very adept at altering his methods in order to ensure that he got away with his crimes. As the story unfolded,I found myself constantly torn between conflicting feelings of frustration, irritation and admiration. There has been times throughout my life when I have wished that I was more like Ruben and been able to confront certain people over their behaviour and attitude towards me. I'm fine at imagining confronting people inside my head but find myself losing all my courage whenever the perfect situation arises in reality.

Roz hated her job in admin but not nearly as much as she hated her parents especially her obnoxious and seriously creepy father. She had spent years plotting ingenious ways to kill him and numerous other individuals who had irritated her throughout her life. The spontaneous decision to closely inspect the inner workings of a washing machine which just happened to be situated in the store where Ruben worked would result in the coming together of two damaged minds and be the beginning of a friendship made in heaven ....or perhaps that should be hell. Roz wanted Ruben to teach her the tricks of the killer trade and he was more than happy to oblige but as time passed, they were both surprised and shocked by the gradual changes that their interactions had on their individual thoughts and behaviour. Could this possibly be what love felt like? Would their developing feelings draw them together or push them apart? Would Roz get her revenge on her obnoxious father? Who was the strange elderly woman who kept insisting on interacting with Roz whenever they encountered each other on the bus?

None is a enthralling, character driven tale, it's the extremely well written and strangely captivating study into the lives and interactions of two authentic, well rounded, mentally damaged individuals and the effects that their budding friendship has on their individual behaviour and personalities. I loved this intelligently plotted tale that is dark and chilling at times with a added dash of humour and I really enjoyed witnessing the changes that the two main characters went through as the story progressed towards it's conclusion. I really hope the author is planning to revisit Ruben and Roz again at some point in the future. A incredible read and very very highly recommended.
