BOOK REVIEW - The Removal Man by R.J.Parker

                                                                    BOOK  SYNOPSIS

Rose is moving. For her and her son, Noah, this is going to be a fresh start.

She’s almost finished packing but Noah is determined to spend one last night camping out in the garden like he used to. Rose agrees as long as he wraps up warm inside their small tent.

Four hours later she’s woken by a frantic banging on the window.

It’s Noah.

There’s someone in the garden.

That’s when Rose picks up the kitchen knife.

Rose and her nine year old son Noah were just days away from moving from their isolated Edwardian house that was situated at the edge of Hampton Forest to their new home of the forth floor of a residential block. The heavy items of furniture had just been taken away by the removal men and Rose had been looking forward to relaxing and indulging in a glass of wine or two. So she wasn't very impressed when Noah asked if he could spend the night in his tent in the back garden. Rose wasn't a big fan of camping due to some bad memories from her past but despite her reservations and overprotective nature, she found herself giving in to her young son's request. Little did she realise that having to spend the night in a tent would be a mild inconvenience when compared to the events that unfolded after the night turned into a terrifying game of cat and mouse with a sadistic killer.

This intense and atmospheric story is written entirely from the perspective of Rose, a feisty and strong willed character who was determined to do everything in her power to outwit their tormentor and get her beloved son to a place of safety. The conflicting emotions and overwhelming feelings of fear and terror that the author had imbued into his main character were authentic and believable. Having a young child as a endangered character always ramps up my feelings of anxiety to the max even though they are generally ok at the end of the story although when the author is Richard Parker, you can never predict what his twisted mind has in store for any of his characters. The antagonist in this story was a cruel individual who had as much empathy for his victims as a proverbial pod person and his smug attitude whenever he was taunting Rose was seriously irritating. He really was a twisted narcissistic individual but why had he targeted Rose and Noah? How did he know so much about their lives? How far out of her comfort zone would Rose be prepared to go in order to escape their tormentors clutches?

Omg,wow...just wow, this is a fast paced, addictive, roller coaster ride that hardly gives the reader a chance to draw in a breath as the story rockets through its numerous twists and turns. I was hooked in from the first page, held captivated by the author's mesmerising story of Rose's desperate battle for the lives of herself and her young son. The chapters are short and snappy, many of which end in a way that infect the reader with a very bad case of just one more chapter syndrome. I was so caught up in this incredible thriller that I read the whole book in one sitting. I think that Richard Parker has excelled his own very high standards of writing with this latest addition to his catalogue of gripping thrillers. I would love to watch a movie or tv adaptation of this intense and atmospheric story and would award it far more than five stars if I could. This is definitely going to be one of my favourite reads of this year. Very very highly recommended by little old me.
