Beautiful Bad opens with a frantic 991 call summoning the police to the Kansas home of ex army soldier Ian,his wife Maddie and their young son Charlie. Diane Varga, the first officer on the scene discovers that a terrible crime has been committed in the beautiful home but by whom? and why?
The chapters flip back and forth in time and alternate between the story of Maddie and Ian's toxic relashionship.Maddie's therapy sessions where she gradually reveals her fears about Ian's PTSD,her concerns for Charlie's safety and the couple's tangled and tumultuous past with Maddie's best friend Jo.There was also chapters headed The Day Of The Killing where the truth of what happened on that fateful day is revealed layer by layer like the unwrapping of the layers on a pass the parcel prize. My favourite parts of the story were Maddie's therapy sessions and the Intreguing The Day Of The Killing chapters. Because I enjoy watching war films with my hubby,I also enjoyed the chapters about when Ian was in Iraq. My favourite characters were Diane and little Charlie,I had mixed feelings about Ian and I definitely didn't like Maddie or Jo.
Beautiful Bad is a exceedingly well written, debut thriller that had some realistic, deeply flawed characters and a sinister ending that chilled me to the bone and will be stuck in my mind for a very long time. It is a twisted tale of secrets, lies, manipulation and deception. It is obvious that the author has done a lot of research into the subject matter covered in this story and she has written about the issues covered with understanding and sensitivity. I really enjoyed this book and once I started reading it I genuinely didn't want to put it down. I would happily recommend this book to other thriller readers and look forward to reading more books written by this author in the future.
