BLOG TOUR BOOK REVIEW - Looker by Laura Sims
Looker is narrated by a unnamed, unravelling woman who is unhappily childless and recently separated. She lives in a run down flat in a deserted building with her ex husband's cat. The narrator is a sad and lonely character who's only wish is to be accepted and not constantly feel like a misfit. The highlight of her day is if she can catch a glimpse of or even better talk to the actress who lives a few doors down in a gleaming brownhouse with her handsome husband and three adorable children. Oh,how the narrator would love to become the actress's friend and be accepted into her family,be given the chance to finally feel like she belongs.
But after the narrator loses her job and her husband demands his cat back, what started off as an innocent preoccupation spirals quickly into a frightening and irretrievable madness.
There was a increasing sense of foreboding cleverly woven into this chilling tale of obsession, envy, stalking, mental health and a lonely woman's desperate need to be accepted. It would be a understatement if I said that the narrator was not a very likeable character. But having spent most of my life feeling like a misfit and struggling to make friends,I could completely understand and sympathize with her desire to be accepted and her feelings of being invisible during the scenes involving her neighbours. She was a complex character who had some serious issues that obviously contributed to her actions and behaviour and caused me to feel a tiny bit of empathy towards her.
This isn't a fast paced story,it's not paced with twists and turns but it is a dark, complex, fascinating character study of a lonely woman's disintegrating life and descent into madness. I really enjoyed this well written, debut novel, the author writes about the complexities of mental health realistically and with understanding and sensitivity. I will definitely be reading more of this author's books in the future.
