BOOK REVIEW : The Marriage Betrayal by Shalini Boland

Omg,this book is unbelievable,a fast paced, roller coaster ride, packed full of so many twists and turns that by the time the reader gets to the shocking conclusion, you are felling seriously dizzy and in desperate need of a lie down in a dark room.

Faye Townsend had been really looking forward to the birthday surprise that she had organised for her husband Jake. A holiday in Swanage,Dorset with their seven year old son Dylan,Jake's sister Lainy, her husband Tom and their young daughter's Annabel and Poppy. Faye had thought that Jake and Lainy would be excited to be back in the seaside town where they grew up but from the moment they arrive, their demeanour and behaviour makes Faye wonder if she has made a massive mistake.

Their holiday home is like something from the set of a Hammer Horror film and despite Faye and Tom's attempts to lighten the atmosphere, you could cut it with a blunt knife. Then just when Faye is wondering if things can get any worse, Jake takes Dylan out dolphin spotting on the cliffs early one morning and they don't come back.

After Dylan's cap is found on the beach and frustrated at sitting around doing nothing,Faye begins her own desperate search for her son. Because like any loving parent she is prepared to do anything and go to any lengths to save her beloved child.

Once you start reading this mesmerising thriller, the reader is hardly a chance to think about breathing, never mind actually taking a breath. You are plunged into the compelling story from the very first page, there's no hanging about,no long drawn out character introductions,no pages and pages of Faye organising the holiday. When we are first introduced to the families, they have just arrived at their holiday home. As the story unfolds and we get to know the characters, you discover that anyone who has a heart would find it difficult not to feel so much sympathy for Faye and Tom and very frustrated with Lainy and Jake's selfish behaviour. The author's depictions of Faye's fear, anxieties and desperation to find Dylan were very realistic and believable. I did like Tom although I did feel that he came across as quite overbearing at times and I had conflicting thoughts about Lainy as the story unfolded before my captivated eyes. Interspersed throughout the book were chapters that slipped back in time to when Lainy and Jake were younger and we learn about a terrible event that happened one summer night after a beach party that they both attended.

I totally and utterly loved this compelling, gripping thriller. Once I started reading it,I honestly didn't want to put it down. The twists and turns arrived at breakneck speed, nothing was what it appeared to be,both story and character wise and the ending was shocking and chilling. I would give this amazing book far more than five stars if I could and it is definitely going to be one of my favourite reads of this year. Very very very highly recommended.
