Welcome to Blackleigh Hall aka Hell Hall, a one time manor house on a large estate that has been converted into a boys boarding school. Like Hogworts from the Harry Potter series the boys are divided into houses that compete against each other and eat their meals sat at long tables in the dining rooms. But Blackleigh Hall is no Hogworts instead it's hall of horrors were young boys, many of whom have never been away from home before live in fear of the older pupils who bully and intimidate the younger pupils. Treat them like their slaves, subject them to degrading initiations and make their every waking moment a living nightmare.
The Oath is set in 1955 and tells the story of three young boys who find themselves shipped off by their parents to prestigious and highly rated Blackleigh Hall. Personally I don't understand why people bother to have children if all they are going to do is send them off to school and only see them during the holidays but that's just my opinion. Anyway...we follow our three heroes Jonathan,Ian and Arthur as they meet up,become friends and struggle to get through their first term as Juniors. After the three friends are subjected to a disgusting initiation by obnoxious bully Hugh Sleeth and his gang of cronies, the three juniors swear an oath that they will get their revenge and pay back the bullies and more. With each passing day the boys life at the Halls becomes more and more unbearable. Will they be able to exact their revenge? Will they all still be alive by the end of term? And is the mysterious senior James Flicker friend of foe?
At times this is a very uncomfortable story to read because the bullying is constantly cruel and sadistic. The author's portrayals of the boy's fear were terrifyingly realistic. The tension builds as all the players are skilfully manoeuvred into position for the final inevitable confrontation. It is a brutal, intense, believable emotionally charged story that plays with the readers emotions and has you routing for the young heroes and dreading any interactions with the bullies.
