BOOK REVIEW - Gone (Gone series book 1) by Stacy Claflin

All Macy Mercer ever wanted was a bit of freedom, go out with her friends, have a bit of fun and date boys just like her best friend Zoey. Macy was seriously fed up with her Dad's controlling behaviour so she decided to sneak out and met Jared, the boy that she had been interacting with on - line. Only Jared wasn't who he appeared to be, he was actually a grown man named Chester Woodran, a seriously disturbed, violent individual who has plans for Macy and is prepared to do whatever it takes to get her to comply to his wishes and demands.

Meanwhile Macy's parents Alyssa and Chad, her brother Alex and Zoey start a desperate search for the missing teenage whilst battling with their feelings of guilt and remorse and keeping their own secrets from.being uncovered.

The chapters alternated between the thoughts of Macy, Alyssa, Chad, Alex, Zoey and there was also a couple that were told from Chester's point of view. I really liked Macy, I couldn't help admiring her feistiness, her determination to retain her identity and escape as soon as she got the chance. Her treatment at the hands of her captor was chilling, cruel and heart breaking. Her indecisiveness over continuing to fight back or playing along with his games whilst waiting for a opportunity to escape. Chester was a cruel, deluded, very unlikable character and I couldn't say that I liked Chad very much either. The author's portrayal of Alyssa's feelings of terror, anxiety and fear for her daughter were realistic and I thought it was really sweet that Alex actually cared about his older sister despite Macy describing him as annoying. I had mixed feelings about Zoey, I was never quite sure about the reliability of her narrative, I had a feeling that she knew more about Macy's situation than she was letting on.

Gone is a fast paced, intense thriller that launched the reader into the action from the very first chapter. The mystery, intregue, twists and turns kept you guessing and frantically turning the pages. This is the first book in a trilogy and therefore the story doesn't have a conclusion and it ends on a cliff hanger. I really enjoyed this gripping, enthralling thriller and look forward to reading the other two titles in the series Held and Over.
