BLOG BLITZ, BOOK REVIEW - His Wife's Secret by Susan Willis

It has been two years since David walked out on his ex wife Beth and their teenage daughter Sally and moved on with his current wife Erin. Despite having the odd blip like every other married couple and Erin being quite moody at times especially when she doesn't get her own way, they are blissfully happy and adore each other. But after they move from the small village of Kibbleworth were David grew up to Bexley Heath near London, Erin seems to undergo a complete personality change almost overnight. Suddenly David finds himself being subjected to violent physical attacks from his beloved wife, terrified and confused he struggles to understand why everything has gone wrong so swiftly, what is Erin keeping from him and what has he done wrong.

The abuse of men is often unfortunately a taboo subject, men who are in abusive relationships or are subjected to sexual or physical abuse or both are often as David feels throughout this story ashamed to admit that they are the victims to abuse. They are scared that if they dare to admit the truth that they will be laughed at and ridiculed, looked on as being weak and pathetic which was another thing that David was concerned about. Despite the fact that I usually don't like people who have affairs, I did think that David was a likeable character and it was heart breaking witnessing the decline in his happy to lucky attitude and his confusion as Erin's behaviour and mind games escalated. As the story unfolded, it swiftly became obvious that Erin suffered from some serious mental health issues which raised the moral question of how culpable she was for her actions. There are so many grey areas when it comes down to mental health which raised another question, should we feel sympathy and be more understanding towards her, did her mental health issues make her a more likeable character because she wasn't fully in control of her actions? I really liked the secondary characters Beth, Sally, Jakub, Jessie and her husband Mike.

His Wife's Secret is a enthralling domestic drama, the story was topical and would cause some interesting discussions if it was read by a book group. The characters were realistic and the subject matter was written with care and sensitivity. The story held my attention throughout and caused me to experience a wide range of emotions. I thought it was a very very enjoyable read and I would happily read more books that were written by this author in the future.
