You are cordially invited to the wedding of the year. The marriage of reality tv star Will Slater and his beautiful fiance Jules Keegan. The marriage ceremony will take place on isolated Cormorant island situated off the Irish coast. A setting that has stunning views of the sea but also deadly marshy bogs that can suck you in if you make the mistake of wandering away from the safety of the paths.
From the moment that the guests arrive there is a undercurrent of tensions, jealousy and secrets simmering away below the surface of the glitz and glamour. Secrets which have roots in the past, roots that are creeping their way through time to wrap themselves around a perpetrator of shocking acts against others. The stunning Wedding cake has barely been cut when a body is discovered in the marshs.
Trapped on a isolated island, with no way to escape due to a vicious storm and gale force winds. They are all at the mercy of the calculating, devious killer who is hiding in plain sight.
This mesmerising thriller is voiced by numerous characters including The Bride (Jules) The Best Man (Johnno) The Brides maid (Olivia) and The Wedding Planner (Aoife) and is written in short, snappy chapters, many of which ended on a cliff hanger. Out of the mixed bag of diverse, vivid characters, there was some who were likeable and some who were not so likeable. There was characters who I felt sympathy for, a few who I changed my mind about as the story unfolded and a number of characters who were not who they pretended to be. Interspersed throughout the book there was chapters that were set on the night of the wedding and followed the four ushers as they searched the grounds around the wedding venue because a terrified waitress had come running into the wedding marquee and reported that something terrible had happened. I loved the interactions and banter between the ushers, the macho facade that they put on even though they were scared out of their wits at times. Towards the conclusion of the story, the author ramped up the tension by including a number of short chapters that were voiced by the possible murder suspects all of which ended with the same line. The night of the wedding chapters were packed full of atmosphere, intrigue and had a spine chilling sense of danger and were my favourite parts of the story. I loved the atmospheric setting for this book, the boggy marsh, the spooky graveyard, the deadly cliff tops and the wonderfully named Whispering Cave. So, in true Agatha Christie style, we have a isolated setting, a raging storm, trapped people, a dead body and a number of suspects. But who was the dead person? Who was the killer and what was their motive?
The Guest List is a incredibly clever, well written mystery/thriller that is reminiscent of a classic Agatha Christie whodunit. I was hooked in from the first page and totally captivated by the enthralling story that was unfolding before my eyes. The plot covered a wide range of subjects including bullying, the dangers of social media, manipulation and family dynamics. The intensity of the story increased as the characters various stories unfolded, building to a crescendo in the closing, breath taking chapters. I thought that this was a incredible, gripping read. Worth far more than five stars and very very highly recommended.
