BLOG TOUR, BOOK REVIEW - Double Deceit by Julienne Brouwers

                                                                 BOOK DESCRIPTION

Jennifer Smits is a young mother, married to a hotshot lawyer and living in Amsterdam. Her world explodes when her husband is found dead at a holiday park during a weekend getaway. Convinced that the police have failed in their investigation, she embarks on a desperate quest for the truth - but the deeper she digs, the more she gets enmeshed in a tangled web of lies, spun by a ruthless law firm.

As Jennifer's search for answers intensifies, her grip on reality weakens. Barely able to manage her patients at the health clinic, or take care of her young son, Jennifer is at risk of losing it all – even her closest friends begin to desert her. And then a chance encounter with a charming stranger sparks a new chain of events that plunges her deeper into a world of threats and corruption. Soon, she begins to fear for her life - but who can she trust, and how far will she go in pursuit of the truth?

This is a gripping, addictive thriller that will make you question everything, including the flaws of forensics. Could we all be framed for a murder we didn’t commit?

It's a terrifying fact that there are people throughout the world who have the power and influence to ensure that a person is framed for a crime that they didn't comment. Framed by unscrupulous people who work for the various law agencies who are supposed to serve and protect and live by the moto innocent until proven guilty. Unfortunately there have been many examples of miscarriages of justice throughout the decades, cases where innocent people have been framed for a crime by the very people who are supposed to serve and protect them. And when they are eventually cleared of the charges, sometimes after spending many years behind bars, they are lucky if they receive a apology. It's just a case of, here's a load of money, that will make up for the years that you have lost and your damaged reputation. This is the story of Jennifer's quest to learn the truth behind the murder of her husband, a search that will find her teaming up with a unlikely ally and uncovering unsavoury truths about the prestigious law firm that her husband worked for at the time of his death. As the story unfolds, Jennifer finds herself receiving threatening notes, being doubted by her friends especially her best friend Lindsey, doubting her own sanity and ultimately facing a murder charge. I had mixed feelings about Jennifer's character, I couldn't help admiring her determination to uncover the truth behind her husband's death and what was really going on behind the scenes of the law firm but there was elements of her character that I didn't like. I can't say that I liked or trusted Lindsey very much, she just got on my nerves and what about the mysterious Ben, was Lindsey right in placing her heart and trust in his hands?

This is a well written, slow burner that keeps the reader guessing, the identity of the killer was definitely a surprise, I certainly didn't see that reveal coming. I really enjoyed the twists and turns of the thriller elements of this story but to be honest, the plot contained a bit too much romance for my personal taste. I did think that it was a enjoyable read and would happily read more of this author's books in the future
