BLOG TOUR, BOOK REVIEW - Silent Ridge by Gregg Olsen

                                                                  BOOK DESCRIPTION

One bath wall is a mural of a brilliant-yellow sunflower. The theme carries over to the shower curtains, but the yellow vinyl is spattered with red blotches. Propped against the mirror is a South Kitsap High School photo of a teenaged girl.

Detective Megan Carpenter is no stranger to horrifying crime scenes, but when she arrives at the home of a woman whose body has been brutalized, Megan is shocked to discover that she knows the victim. Monique Delmont helped Megan when she was in danger years ago. And the killer has left a disturbing calling card… two laminated photographs of a sixteen-year-old high school girl – Megan.

Someone is taunting her in the worst way possible and Megan is convinced she knows who is responsible. She just has to find him.

With the help of her new partner, Deputy Ronnie Marsh, Megan begins to unravel the clues that will lead them to the killer including links to three female murder cases from nearly twenty years ago – one of which was Monique’s daughter.

But to protect those closest to her, Megan must continue to hide the dark truth of her past, even if that means lying to her team about her connection to Monique.

When two photographs of a teenage Megan are found at her boyfriend’s place in Snow Creek, she knows the killer is circling and ready to strike again.

Can she get to him before he finds her? And will she pay the ultimate price for trying to keep her terrifying past buried?

An addictive edge-of-your-seat crime thriller from the Number One, New York TimesWall Street JournalUSA Today and Amazon Chart bestselling author.

Detective Megan Carpenter's terrifying past smashes into her present when she is summoned to a horrific crime scene and discovers that the victim is someone she knew in her past life. Now, Megan has to carry out a investigation without revealing to her rookie partner Ronnie and their boss Sheriff Gray what she knows about the victim, that their pasts are connected and that she suspects she knows the identity of the killer. Keeping secrets is nothing new to Megan, after all Megan is not actually her real name so she does what she usually does, she lies and lies again. She lies to Sheriff Gray, she lies to Ronnie and she lies to her boyfriend Dan despite knowing that his connection to her could cause his life to be in danger. I know that Megan had a horrific back story and that your character and behaviour can be irreparably damaged by events from your past and that it was therefore understandable why she had so many character flaws but I honestly didn't think that she was a very likeable individual for various reasons. I really loved motor mouth Ronnie, I thought she was a fantastic character who added humour and light to the dark, gritty story.

interspersed throughout the book was chapters that were voiced from the perspective of the killer and gave the reader a insight into that person's thoughts and the motives behind their behaviour and actions. Was Megan's theories about the identity of the killer correct? Can Megan find and catch that person whilst still keep the secrets from her past?

This is a quick read that hooks the reader in from the first page and draws you into the author's realistic character's fictional world. Silent Ridge is the third book in the Detective Megan Carpenter series and although it can be read as a standalone,to enjoy it to its full potential, I think that it is advisable to read the titles in the series in the correct order. Although I did enjoy this twisty thriller, I felt that having not read the previous two books put me at a disadvantage as the plot of the book contained numerous references to events from Megan's past.
