BOOK DESCRIPTION
“Let’s play truth or dare, for old times’ sake…”
I reluctantly agree, silently praying none of my three oldest friends gets the chance to ask me a truth. There is so much I’ve been keeping from them. Just for this weekend, for our long-awaited college reunion, I want to put all that aside and have some fun.
But it wasn’t my secrets I should have been worried about. It was theirs.
When Ada draws truth, she can’t meet my eye. “Ivy…” she begins and then stops. Before saying something that I immediately wish she could take back.
But of course she can’t, not now.
The worst thing is no one else seems as shocked. I realise they have let me think I was to blame all these years. Perhaps I never knew my closest friends to begin with. Maybe we were never actually friends all…
A gripping, emotional drama about the complexities of friendship and what truly lies beneath the image of a perfect life. Fans of Liane Moriarty, Kerry Fisher and Sally Hepworth will be hooked from the very first page.
Friendships can be diverse, some are close and loyal, some can last for years and some can be short lived. You can believe that someone is your friend but in reality they are stabbing you in the back at every opportunity and then they are suddenly ghosting you. And then there are the toxic friendships and the type of friendships that mean more to one individual than they do to the other.
Elise - who is married to Brad, they have three children,Tommy,Marianna and Piper.
Ada - who is married to Tyler, they have a baby son called Sam.
Ivy - who is in the process of getting divorced and has major financial issues.
Libby - a widow who has two daughters Caitlin and Bethany
The chapters of this tale of friendships, secrets and forgiveness alternated between the perspectives of the four main characters, each of whom had her own unique personality, character traits and hidden issues in their private lives. They had met and formed a tight friendship whilst they were at college, twenty years ago but,as very often happens over the passage of time, their lives had drifted apart and they weren't as close as they used to be. Elise (the mother hen of the group) had organised with military precision,a weekend at her home in the Cape,a chance for the women to spend time together without interruptions or responsibilities and try to recreate the closeness that they used to share. But,you know what they say about best laid plans, almost from to the moment that the women get together,a undercurrent of tensions ripples below the surface, building in intensity as the weekend progresses. And,as we all know, no matter how far you run, your troubles are always bound to follow you. Will their friendship survive the weekend or will confessions and revelations result in them going their separate ways.....forever?
As well as being given inside access to the interactions between the women and events in their private lives in the present day, we were also taken back into the past and given their backstories during their time at college and a insight into the reasons for Elise's behaviour as a adult. To be honest, when I was first introduced to the women, with the exception of Libby, they got on my nerves and I found them quite unlikable. But as the story unfolded,I got to know them better and discovered the truths that they were concealing,I found my opinions and feelings changing. I can't say that I liked Brad very much and I felt a lot of sympathy for lovely Tyler.
This is a well written study into the complexities of human interactions and relationships. Wether it is between friends, partners, lovers, siblings, parents or our children, every relationship is unique in its own way, some are good and some are unfortunately very bad and toxic. Each of the women in this book was a realistic individual who had issues that affect many of us every single day. I really enjoyed this compelling read and would happily read more of this author's books in the future.
