BLOG TOUR,BOOK REVIEW - The Night Has Seen Your Mind by Simon Kearns

                                                                BOOK DESCRIPTION

Tech billionaire, Mattias Goff, has invited five creative professionals – programmer, pianist, writer, actor, and photographer – for a monthlong residency at Crystal Falls, his Arctic retreat.

Researching brain waves, and especially the enigmatic gamma wave, Goff asks his guests to wear a kind of EEG cap in order to record the electrical activity in their brains while they engage with their respective disciplines. Although they will be paid $5million each for the experience, they all start their sojourn a little wary – some more than others.

Cut off from the outside world in the stunningly beautiful, if stark, Alaskan winter landscape they immerse themselves in their work. Soon, though, reality seems to be shifting. What is Goff really researching? Are his guests only being observed, or manipulated?

Sarah - The Photographer

Patrick - The Actor

Jenny - The Pianist

Chris - The Programmer

Cassian - The Author

Five strangers have agreed to spend a month staying at the arctic isolated, retreat of Tech billionaire Mattis Goff to assist in his research into brain waves. All starts off well and they soon start enjoying their luxurious surroundings but as time passes, some of them start to suspect they have not been told the whole truth about why they are there. And as the tension rises and mistrust spreads amongst the group, they soon find themselves caught in a horrific nightmare.

The short, snappy chapters alternated between the perspectives of the five guests, each of whom had their own unique personalities and character traits. There were aspects of each character that I liked and also aspects that I didn't like. The author had given his realistic characters dimension by given each of them their own individual backstory, the details of which were revealed in flashbacks as the story unfolded. I would say that my favourite character was Sarah, followed by Patrick and my least favourite was Cassian, the only thing I liked about him was his name.

I loved the author's stunning descriptions of the settings for this book, the amazing, futuristic sounding house that was set into the side of a smallish hill, near a narrow river. I have always thought it amazing that no matter how cold the surface is above the water,it never stops flowing. The stark contrast between the beauty of snow and the danger it is too your life if you are unfortunate enough to get lost in a blizzard. The ghostly silence and muffled atmosphere after a heavy snowfall. The mysterious, beautiful Northern Lights lighting up the everlasting night.

Intense, atmospheric and with pages that are permeated with a chilling sense of foreboding, this is a well written story that has the reader hooked in from the first page and glued to your kindle. The plot has elements of classic films like The Grey,The Shining, The Thing, Invasion of the Body Snatchers and Dead Seed and is a gripping read that will thrill fans of multiple genres. It's fast paced due the short snappy chapters, many of which end on a cliff hanger giving the reader a very bad case of just one more chapter syndrome. I would love to watch a film adaptation of this thrilling story. A brilliant read and very highly recommended.
