Exhausted, desperately seeking sanctuary, Emma arrives at the pretty English village of Flammark.
But she cannot rest. A strange sleeping sickness stalks the village and a young woman has disappeared.
Why won't the police investigate?
As events unfold, Emma becomes embattled yet again, compelled to fight for her life against a deadly curse linked to a past about which she had no knowledge.
She is the only one able to vanquish the evil but doing so will entail confronting an horrific and all-too-familiar enemy.
The question is, will she be strong enough?
In this, the first book in what looks like is going to be a wonderful series, readers are introduced to Emma and the fantastic cast of characters who live in the picturesque village of Flammark. When we first met Enma, she is on the run from her violent, controlling boyfriend and has utilised the stick a pin in the map method to decide where she is going to hide. When she first arrives in Flammark, she is expecting to be treated like a outsider but the villagers are surprisingly friendly and welcoming and Emma swiftly settles into her new home in a pretty stone cottage that overlooks the church. But as Emma starts making friends and enjoying her new found freedom, she is shocked to learn that a young girl is missing and the village is blighted by a mysterious sleeping sickness. Emma can't resist trying to uncover the truth behind the strange occurrences in the apparently peaceful little village that she has began to see as home. But, unbeknownst to Emma, Flammark has a dark past,a ancient evil is lurking amongst the gravestones, watching and waiting,a evil with a very familiar face and a burning desire for revenge.
The intense story is voiced almost entirely from Emma's perspective,a wonderful, believable character who at the beginning of the story understandably struggled to interact with and trust people. It was heart warming watching her character development as the story unfolded and she accepted other villagers into her life but no matter how accepted and settled she felt, the feelings of fear where never far from her thoughts. The story didn't have a very large cast of characters but the ones who did appear were a mixed bag of wonderful, vivid individuals.
Interspersed throughout the book there was chapters that were written in italics and voiced from the perspective of a sick and twisted individual. Someone who had shocking opinions on women and a overwhelmingly obsession with Emma.
This is a very well written blend of mystery, thriller, domestic drama and the supernatural that had me captivated and glued to my kindle from the first page. It's a gripping intense read and I thought It was a brilliant start to a new series. I look forward to reading many more of Emma's adventures in the future
Author Bio –
I've been writing blogs and stories off and on for years, but quite new to writing novels. My background is in teaching - I ran my own English and Drama departments in three inner city schools - then became the owner of a radical bookshop. Now I write full time. I love supernatural storytelling, since it allows the inclusion of real human issues within my writing. Let's face it, who hasn't been touched by evil in their lives at one time or another? "When Angels Fear", my first novel, deals with domestic violence and how Emma - the main character - overcomes her shattered confidence to prevail over the evil which oppresses her. It's important to me that my characters are both real and relatable. I'm a total fan of Joss Whedon and Stephen King and love the way they create ensembles of characters that live on in the mind long after they've been watched or read. Humour is important to me to - I hope readers of my fiction will get that. The last thing I want to offer is a dry read! I adore my garden, my animals and my husband - probably in that order, lol. Other obsessions include Scrabble. Total addict. It's why I sleep so badly. I'm glued to the Scrabble app until the early hours!

Fantastic review, Nicki! Initially I was worried that I'd crossed a line with Emma's ex, and those fragments meant I had to leave all his characterisation/back story to the end!
