This story introduces readers to feisty Julianna Baptiste who is a kick boxer and works as a bodyguard for her boss Jackson Haynes and his family. Julianna does enjoy her job but she has a inquisitive nature and would much rather prefer to work as a investigator. In her quest to prove her abilities as a investigator to Jackson,she finds herself drawn into the lives of Jackson,his family and a character called Mark who has just started working for Jackson at his vast company. Mark is hiding from some ruthless money launderers, has a father who is in prison for a crime that he insists he didn't commit. Mark's mother is constantly badgering him to find a new lawyer who is actually capable of uncovering new evidence that will prove that his father is innocent. Mark also has a estranged sister called Ellen who he hasn't seen for three years, that is until a chance encounter in a cafe brings her back into his life. A chance encounter that will result in Mark, Ellen and Julianna finding themselves caught up in the plans of a sinister character who has been patiently plotting and scheming their revenge and now has the perfect opportunity to execute their plans.
The chapters of this thriller alternated between the perspectives of Julianna, Mark and Ellen, three vivid individuals who each had their own unique personalities and character traits. If I'm honest,I can't say that I thought any of these characters were very likeable although I did feel a tiny bit of empathy for Mark and Ellen due to the behaviour of their mother. When the whole truth behind the events of their father's conviction were revealed,I did feel a tiny bit of sympathy towards him. I know his actions were wrong but when you took all the facts into consideration,what he did was rather honourable and heroic. My favourite character was Julianna's boss Jackson,he was a really likeable individual who cared about his employees,listened to and valued their opinions and instantly jumped into action after Julianna went to him with her concerns about Ellen. He was a very rare male in the world of fiction,a man who actually loved and adored his beautiful wife.
This is a slow burning thriller that builds on intensity in the last quarter of the story. To be honest,there was a bit too much build up and romance for my liking but I'm certain other readers will enjoy the parts that I didnt. I liked the mystery,intrigue and prevailing sense of danger that permeated Ellen's parts of the story. I thought this was a very well written,mostly enjoyable start to I'm certain many readers are going to hail as a thrilling series.
