BLOG TOUR, BOOK REVIEW - Not My Mother by Miranda Smith

                                                                 BOOK DESCRIPTION

What if the person you trust most in the world is lying to you?

I’d heard of the Baby Caroline case, of course. When a baby is snatched from her mother’s arms, the whole country knows about it. I knew about the parents left lying by the swimming pool, the open window in the nursery. But I never dreamed it had anything to do with me.

Today, my beautiful daughter turned one. We were unwrapping gifts and blowing out candles when the knock came at the door, and they took my mother away.

The police say she’s not really my mother. That she stole me, thirty years ago.

When I visit her, desperate for answers, she looks me in the eye, and says nothing. I can barely breathe. Is my whole life a lie?

I have to find out, but the more I learn, the more scared I become. And soon I start to wonder, am I losing my grip on reality or is my own daughter in terrible danger?

An absolutely gripping psychological thriller, perfect for fans of Gillian Flynn, Ruth Ware and Lisa Jewell.

Our experiences and sense of identity as adults are very likely shaped by events in our childhoods and early adulthood. Memories are heavily influenced and based on feelings we had surrounding those events and experiences. But, what if something happens that takes our memories and sense of identity and extinquishes them as easily as you blow out the candles on a birthday cake. Causing you to be come tetherless and float around with no sense of direction like wisps of smoke carried on the breeze.

The chapters of this gripping thriller alternated between the perspectives of Murial, whose chapters were set in the present day and her mother Eileen, whose chapters were set in the past. Both the women were vivid, realistic individuals who had each been through their own personal trials and tribulations in the past. Although I fully understood that Murial's life and her identity as she knew it had been been blown into tiny little pieces and she was struggling to deal with her conflicting emotions. I didn't think she was very likeable at various times in the story. I thought that she took her two friends Des and Carmen, who were both very likeable, loyal characters for granted and had a annoying woe is me aspect to her character.

Eileen's chapters took the reader through her backstory and events leading up to the fateful day that she was forced to make a number of life changing decisions. Eileen's life had been hard at times, she had made mistakes and faced tragedy but was she the evil killer that she had been portrayed by the press. Was Murial actually missing baby Caroline and if she was, then what had happened in the past that had caused the character called Susan to kidnap a innocent little baby.

Towards the end of the book was chapters that were voiced from the perspective of a spoilt character called Amelia. But who was she and how did she fit into the story?

This is intricately plotted, well written, character driven thriller that draws you in as the drama, trials and tribulations of the realistic characters unfolded before your captivated eyes. It has some unexpected twists and turns and a underlying theme of family, friendship, acceptance and belonging. I thought it was a very enjoyable, entertaining read and I would happily read more of this author's books in the future.
