BLOGTOUR, BOOK REVIEW - A Good Liar by Amanda Brooke

                                                                    BOOK SYNOPSIS

When a fire destroys the Empress Theatre, a devastating tragedy unfolds.

Amelia’s mother lost her piece of mind forever when she left her daughter alone for a few life-changing moments.

The dance school lost their beloved teacher, Hilary, who died saving the lives of her young pupils.

Karin lost her memory, and the answers she desperately craves.

Claudia lost the one thing that would have made her perfect life complete.

As local reporter Leanne picks over the embers of that night, what seemed like a straightforward case of negligence becomes something else entirely: somebody is lying – each person has lost something, but one of them has sold their soul…

Oh, what a tangled web we weave when first we practice to deceive!

What had started as a fun filled evening watching a young ballet group performing their production of Alice In Wonderland had ended in terror, devastation and the death of eleven people when a fire broke out in the newly renovated Empress Theatre. One of the victims had been the best friend of local reporter Leanne Pitman, a stubborn and feisty individual who was determined to make the people she held responsible for the tragic events pay for their actions and get justice for the victims and survivors of that devastating night. But as her investigation continued, she began to discover that maybe things were not as clear cut as they had first appeared and she was uncovering more questions than answers. Due to the horror that they had experienced, the survivors were mentally vulnerable and their memories of the events were hazzy, unreliable and in some cases non existent. But one of them was not who they appeared to be and was prepared to use lies and manipulation to get what they felt they deserved in life without caring who got hurt in the process.

The story opens with a heart pounding chapter that was written in italics and recounted the terrifying events as they unfolded in the theatre then we moved forward to almost a year after the disaster and followed Leanne as she conducted her interviews with the various survivors. I had mixed feelings about Leanne, I know she was still struggling with her grief about the death of her best friend Lois and could have been affecting her thoughts and reactions to certain people but I thought that she was very judgemental at times and had a cunning and quite nasty side to her character. I can't stay that I liked Leanne's boss Mal very much but I did think that her friend and work colleague Frankie was a very likeable and loyal individual. The survivors were a mixed bag of realistic individuals, each of whom had been affected in some way by the events that had happened in the theatre. As in reality there was individuals who had reacted selflessly whilst others had on cared about their own safety and well being. Some of them had the answers to Leanne's questions locked within their munds, lost secrets that when they were revealed would expose the truth about the good liar and antagonist of the story.

Interspersed throughout the story was chapters that were written in italics, centred on the events of the fire and gradually revealed the truth had hidden secrets of that fateful night.

Wow....just wow,  this is a extremely well written, gripping, intense, addictive thriller that books the reader in from the first page, keeps you guessing and glued to your kindle. The descriptions of the fire, the destruction of the theatre and the terror of the people who were trapped inside were so graphic and realistic that you could close your eyes and picture the scenes in your head. The plot is packed with twists and turns and had a cast of vivid, realistic characters. I would love to watch a film or tv adaptation of this captivating thriller. Worth all the stars and more and definitely going to be one of my favourite reads of this year.
