In this horror series set in London, the novella Black Witch Moon is book #1 in the Black Witch Saga. 

This atmospheric and suspense packed novella is written entirely from the perspective of Robert Winter, a doctor who works at a institute for the mentally impaired that was situated in the city of London. The book opens with Winter attending the hanging of one of his patients Elizabeth Pickin who had been found guilty of being a witch. That dark era in history was packed full of fear, judgement and hypocrisy and if you were ever suspected of being a witch, you were basically damned wether you were innocent or guilty. The bible contains a commandment that states you should not kill and yet so called witch hunters travelled around hunting and killing people in the name of the church. And you could be found guilty of witchcraft for the most mundane and innocent reasons and very often through the testimony of others wether they were telling the truth or not as happened with Lizzie Pickin. Although strange and frightening things started happening after her execution, Winter began to have doubts about Lizzie's guilt and found himself compelled to uncover the truth. Was Lizzie innocent or had Winter fallen under the spell of a powerful witch?

I really liked Robert Winter,she was a fantastic character who genuinely cared about his patients unlike some other individuals who also worked at the asylum. I also liked Sarah, his foul mouthed housekeeper with whom he was involved in a secret relationship. The other characters were a eclectic mix of vivid, realistic individuals, some likeable, some not so likeable.

The author's descriptions of the city of London in the 1600s were vivid, realistic and believable, the descriptions of the buildings, people travelling around on horse and cart, the widespread poverty and the mud, human waste and other unidentifiable things that ran down and littered the streets.

I absolutely love this author's books, they are always well written, gripping and addictive and Black Moon Witch is no exception. The author certainly packs a lot into the 96 pages, keeps you guessing and glued to your kindle. This is a brilliant introduction into what looks like is going to be a compelling series and I look forward to finding out what the author has planned for his readers in book 2.

Colin Garrow grew up in a former mining town in Northumberland. He has worked in a plethora of professions including: taxi driver, antiques dealer, drama facilitator, theatre director and fish processor, and has occasionally masqueraded as a pirate. All Colin's books are available as eBooks and most are also out in paperback, too.
