BOOK REVIEW - She's Gone by M.A.Comley

                                                                     BOOK SYNOPSIS

One second she was there, the next... she was gone!

After months of fighting the court system to see five-year-old Adele, Martin Jenkins finally has his daughter back. It’s only for a week’s holiday, but he’ll take that to have her near him once more.

Keeping three children under the age of eight amused is no mean feat. Whilst Martin’s girlfriend, Louise, is looking after her daughter and Adele, Martin is playing football with her son close by. Excitement fills the air at the local beauty spot in the beautiful Lake District until a chilling scream rocks Martin’s world.

The police, Mountain Rescue and other volunteers are brought in to help with the search but Martin’s life is ripped to shreds that day. The day his daughter is declared missing.
Written in two parts, this is a gripping thriller with a plot that centres around every parent's worst nightmare, the disappearance of a young child. The first part is narrated from the perspective of Martin who at the beginning of the story is on route to a holiday cottage situated in the Peak District with his girlfriend Louise, her two children and his own five year old daughter Adele. Martin was looking forward to getting to know his young daughter after spending months fight for access in the family courts. On the first full day of their holiday whilst they are visiting a nearby lake, Martin is plunged into a living nightmare when Adele disappears whilst in Louise's care. Despite a extensive search led by DI Samantha Cobbs, no evidence or leads are uncovered that give any indication what had happened to the little girl and eventually the trail goes cold.

The first half of the book is narrated entirely from the perspective of Martin, a character who despite feeling empathy for him due to the fact that his young daughter was missing, I didn't think that he was very likeable at times due to his overly aggressive attitude. You can't honestly say how you would react in any given situation unless you have experienced it personally but I thought that the way that Martin treated Louise was very cruel and heartless. As in reality, on top of coping with their conflicting emotions over the disappearance of their daughter, Martin and his ex wife Deborah (Debs) also had to deal with the press intruding into their lives trying to get their next front page headline without any thought or respect for the grieving parents.

The second part of the book is predominantly narrated from the perspective of Debs and set five years later. Martin and Debs now have a three month old baby boy called Logan who Debs is struggling to cope with and can't help comparing to her beloved and still missing daughter Adele. One day whilst Debs is at the local lake with Logan trying to stop him from screaming even if it's only for a short time, she gets talking to a woman who suggests that she takes Logan to a mother and baby club and suggests The Gingerbread club which wasn't far away. When Debs visits the club, she discovers that the people are all friendly and welcoming and as time passed she became very close to mother of five Emmy. One afternoon when Debs accompanies Emmy to pick up two of her children from school, she is shocked when she sees a little girl stood at the school gates who looks vaguely familiar. Could the young girl possibly be Debs missing daughter? If she was, then where had she been for the last five years and how far was Debs prepared to go to get her beloved daughter back?

I really enjoyed this enthralling thriller that had me captivated from the first page. The multiple layers of the story unfurled like the petals of a blossoming flower until the truth of what happened to Adele on that fateful day is revealed in all its shocking glory. The story caused me to experience a wide range of emotions and my feelings about certain character's ebbed and flowed like the waves of the sea. This is a incredibly well written, emotionally charged thriller by a obviously very talented author and I will definitely be reading many more of her books in the future.

                                                                        AUTHOR BIO
