BLOGTOUR, BOOK REVIEW - The Score by Kerry Kaya

                                                                     BOOK SYNOPSIS

He did the crime…

Twenty years ago, Fletch avenged the gangland killing of his younger brother, Spencer and accepted his guilt. But his actions meant he had to leave his precious children, Austin and Kitty to fend for themselves. He thought they would be looked after...

Served his time…

Now a free man, Fletch returns to find his family in chaos, devastated by his prolonged incarceration. Kit is married to notorious gangster Rosco Taylor, while Austin seems hell bent on doing everything he can to create a turf war. Fletch knows he has to do something to get his kids under control, but he also knows that the seeds of this disaster were planted long ago by his own reckless actions.

Now Fletch is back and it’s time to settle the score.

The chapters of this dark and gritty gangland thriller are written from the perspectives of a multitude of characters many of whom appeared in the previous book The Price.

Twenty two years have passed since Fletch was locked up for a revenge kilking, the only thing that had helped him get through his sentence was the knowledge that his kids Austin and Kitty were both living safe and happy lives. Now, he has served his sentence and is finally free, he is looking forward to getting to know his now adult children. But he soon discovers that their lives had not been as happy as he had been lead to believe and their reunion does not go as well as he had expected. Austin is pleased to see his father but is desperate to keep him from uncovering just how deep in the brown stuff he has found himself due to his impulsive and uncontrollable behaviour. Kit who is trapped in a unhappy marriage to notorious gangster Rosco Taylor blames her father for their unhappy upbringing and wants nothing to do with him. Fletch can't help feeling that her attitude has been caused by her selfish, manipulative mother who is still on the scene and unbeknownst to Fletch living with his mother Jenny and his Uncle Frank. Kit was fiercely protective of her brother and doing everything in her power to prevent him from falling into the hands of her vicious bully of a husband. After Fletch learns the truth about what had been happening in the lives of his family whilst he was in prison and just how much of mess Austin has made of his life, he finds himself drawn back into the dangerous and unpredictable life of a gangster. A world of secrets, lies and betrayals, little realising that another crime family are also planning to exact revenge on him and his loved ones for events from the past.

The story had quite a large cast of diverse, vivid, realistic individuals, some likeable, some not so likeable but unlike some books that have a large cast of characters this fast paced thriller was very easy to follow and understand.

The Score is a extremely well and intelligently written, dark, gritty and at times harrowing insight into the world of gangs in London that had me hooked in and glued to my kindle from the first page. As you would expect from this type of story, there is quite a lot of violence but the descriptions and scenes weren't overly graphic or uncomfortable to read. I would love to watch a film or tv mini series about Fletch and his life of crime. A very enjoyable, thrilling read, perfect for people who enjoy a good gangster film or programmes like Gangs Of London and very very  highly recommended.
