Mini Blog Blitz, Book Excerpt : Spiral Into Darkness by Joseph Lewis

                                                                 THE BLURB

He blends in. He is successful, intelligent and methodical. There are no clues. There are no leads. The only thing the FBI and local police have to go on is the method of death: two bullets to the face- gruesome and meant to send a message. But it’s difficult to understand any message coming from a dark and damaged mind. Two adopted boys, struggling in their own world, have no idea they are the next targets. Neither does their family. And neither does local law enforcement.

Law Enforcement investigates a series of murders that appear to be from the same hand. They’ve already asked the FBI for help and have come to the conclusion it is a serial killer, motive unknown. At the scene of the latest murder, police and sheriff deputies speak to the victim’s husband.

The Fortune home sat on a quiet residential street of middle- to lower middle-class homes. Blue-collar type homes of the silent, sometimes struggling working class. Or maybe homes of young couples starting out who lacked the money for a newer home in the burbs.
David Fortune’s eyes were red and his face puffy. His dark hair mussed and his five o’clock shadow prominent. He sat forward with his forearms on his knees, but his head hung low, and now and then he snagged a tissue and wiped his eyes.
They were in the small living room. Graff and Eiselmann sat in stuffed dark gray or ruddy brown chairs. Fortune sat on the couch facing them. The volume on the TV was turned down, and Graff didn’t recognize the show. An older woman, who Graff assumed was a mother or mother-in-law, stuck her head into the room from time to time, only to be rebuked by an older man, who Graff assumed was a father or father-in-law, and when he did, the older woman would disappear back into the kitchen.
“I don’t know anything more,” Fortune said, throwing his hands up in the air.
They had been there for twenty minutes, and what the two detectives found out was that David Fortune was thirty-three years-old and worked in IT at Associated Bank on East Kilbourn Avenue. It was the fourth largest bank in Milwaukee, and Fortune was one of six computer guys making sure the network ran without a hitch. It wasn’t the type of job that would piss someone off enough to pull a trigger on his wife.
He was lean and lanky, and Eiselmann pegged him as a runner. He looked like he hadn’t slept all night. In fact, his t-shirt could have been the shirt he had worn the night before. He wore jeans and had white athletic socks on his feet stuffed into some well-worn brown suede slippers.
Gwen Fortune was a dental hygienist at a family clinic. On the side, she did medical transcription from home. Between David’s income and both of Gwen’s incomes, they did okay.
She was one month shy of her thirty-third birthday. A two-sport athlete at a rival high school, she and David had met their junior year on a blind date set up by one of David’s friends. They had dated on and off, but got serious their sophomore year in college, she at UW-Milwaukee and he at Marquette. They got married a year after they had graduated.
Their two girls, four and two, were with Gwen’s sister and brother-in-law. Given their ages, there was no way they could comprehend what had taken place, Graff thought. At any rate, Graff felt for the guy. He wondered how he’d raise Garrett by himself if something tragic had happened to Kelli. He shuddered involuntarily.
Later in the day, Fortune would be surrounded by family and friends, and they’d try to lift the burden of grief and despair off of him. Grief shared sort of thing. Still. Graff shook his head.
