Blog Tour - Review : The Liars Girl by Catherine Ryan Howard

It has been ten years since Alison Smith fled to the Netherlands, putting her shattered life into a firmly sealed compartment in her mind and steadfastly refusing to take even the tiniest peak inside. But your past always finds a way to catch up with you and the arrival of two Gardi from Dublin finds Alison pulled back to face her past. Her first love Will Hurley confessed and was convicted for the murder of five university students including Alison's best friend Liz. Only now it appears that a copycat is replicating Will's crimes and the police have asked for Will's help. He claims that he has the information that the police need but will only give that information to Alison.

After Alison reluctantly agrees to talk to Will, the secrets and lies from the past finally begin to unravel. Everyone was hiding something back then, including Alison herself.

The story flips back and forth between two time frames, Alisons reunion with Will and the investigation into the present day murders (now) And Alison and Liz's friendship? before and during their time at University, the effect that her meeting Will had on her life and the events leading up to his arrest (then) Alison was a likeable character who had many redeemable qualities but her thought processes were at times very frustrating. Why did she stay friends with Liz  and put up her childish behaviour? And why, despite insisting that she loved Will, was she so convinced that he was guilty? Was Alison involved in the murders and that was why she ran away to the Netherlands at the first opportunity? Scattered throughout the book was the odd chapter voiced by the present day killer, giving the reader a insight into how that person's mind worked and their not very logical reasons for their crimes.

The Liars Girl is not a fast paced story but it was a enjoyable read that held my attention throughout. It had a few intense moments and certainty kept me guessing. The characters were all vivid and well developed and the story flowed well, the changes in the time frames were seamless and there was a unexpected twist at the end. This is the first book that I have read by this author and it definitely will not be my last.
