Blog Tour Review : The Sinister Gathering (Sophie Brown #3) by Diane Ezzard

If Sophie Brown had known just how stressful and dangerous her stay at the retreat would turn out to be,she would have never entered the building.

After Sophie's old anxieties rear there ugly heads and she starts to have doubts about her relationship with Jack. She decides to attend a well-being retreat, deep in the Scottish Highlands.

Peace and harmony are advertised but as she gets to know the other women staying at Glenoch Hall, fights and arguments become the norm.

She was looking for peace but instead found death.

Bumbling amateur sleuth Sophie Brown returns to once again poke her nose into other people's business whilst simultaneously telling herself that what is happening in other people's lives really has nothing to do with her but then again, she likes helping people. Getting herself caught up in life threatening situations and then instantly regretting her impulsive actions. She has plenty of her own issues that she should be dealing with but she just can't help involving herself in the lives of the vivid characters she finds herself spending time with at Glenoch Hall. The other women were a mixed bag of diverse personalities who each had secrets and realistic issues that many women have to deal with in reality every day. I loved the isolated setting for this book, the crumbling building, the fog shrouded grounds surrounded by deep dense woods that were the setting for a couple of heart pounding, intense chapters. I always think that forests and woods can seem sinister and otherworldly whether it's broad daylight or the dead of night when all you can hear is your own footsteps that sound so loud no matter how carefully you tread or maybe it's not your footsteps, maybe it's the footsteps of whoever is pursuing you.

A isolated setting, untrustworthy characters, sinister notes, secrets, lies and murder all combine together to produce a gripping, cosy little mystery. The Sinister Gathering is my favourite book in this series so far and I look forward to reading whatever trouble Sophie is going to get herself into in her next adventure.
