BLOG TOUR BOOK REVIEW - Clear My Name by Paula Daly
Carrie has always denied that she brutally murdered her husband's lover Ella. She denied it when they arrested her, when they put her in front of a jury, and when they sent her to prison.
She is now three years into a fifteen year sentence and she is still insisting that she is innocent.
Then suddenly Carrie is given hope when her case is taken on by Innocence UK,a charity that takes on alleged miscarriages of justice.
Tess Gilroy is asked to take on Carrie's case but as Tess digs deeper, she begins to realise that if she is going to help this woman, then Tess must risk uncovering the secrets that she has struggled a lifetime to hide.
Clear My Name is set in Morecambe,Lancashire,a place that I have not personally ever visited. The chapters alternate between Tess and Carrie and are set in the present day and 4 and 5 years previously.
At the beginning of the case,Tess is not very pleased when she is told that she will be being shadowed by a new member of the team Avril Hughes. Tess normally likes to work alone and therefore for a while she is not very nice to quiet, inexperienced Avril but as time passes it is lovely to witness their relationship develop into a close friendship . Tess is feisty, stubborn and very dedicated to her job but why does this case affect her more than all her previous cases. Why is she prepared to take more risks than she normally does, risks that end up endangering both Tess's and Avril's lives. And why does Tess keep getting the feeling that she is being followed.
During Carrie's chapters,as well as following her story in the present day,we are also taken into the past and given a insight into her relashionship with her obnoxious husband Pete and their daughter Mia and into the events leading up to Ella's murder. The way that Carrie was treated by the police, especially during her panic attack was disturbing, chilling and frankly rather scary. But was she innocent as she claimed or was she a cunning, manipulative killer?
Paula Dayl's books are always extremely well written and Clear My Name is no exception. It has twists and turns, believable, vivid characters and a tight plot that keeps the reader guessing and frantically turning the pages. I would love to read more miscarriages of justice thrillers featuring Tess and Avril. Enthralling,thought-provoking and gripping. Very highly recommended.
