Book Blurb
Darkest Hour (Battle Ground #3)
Bex Ellman and Ketty Smith are fighting on opposite sides in a British civil war. Bex and her friends are in hiding, but when Ketty threatens her family, Bex learns that her safety is more fragile than she thought.
The Battle Ground series is set in a dystopian near - future UK, after Brexit and Scottish independence.
Darkest Hour continues the stories of Bex and Ketty from the previous two titles in the series Battle Ground and False Flag. In this book, Bex and her friends have been taken in by a resistance cell are are hiding out above a shop and Newcastle. They are constantly on the alert and learning to drive in case they need to make a quick getaway. But the stresses of being constantly on the run,the confines of their hiding place and decisions that have been made in the past are starting to cause tensions amongst the group. Will their bond be strong enough to hold them together or will they be torn apart just when they need each other the most? Meanwhile Ketty is currently in London, has been promoted to the rank of Corporal and assigned the task of putting together profiles of Bex and her friends and deciding who is to be captured alive and who is expendable. I understand that Ketty was standing by her convictions and believed what she was doing was right,I thought this was a very admirable character trait but I thought she was a very cold hearted individual and not very likeable. I thought Bex was a wonderful, likeable character,a strong minded young girl who was doing the best she could to keep her friends alive and cope with a leadership role that she didn't really want and dealing with the situation to the best of her abilities.
This is a very topical and all too scarily believable story considering how politically unstable this country is at the moment. It's gripping, intense at times, often quite chilling and very thought provoking. This is the third book in the series and it can be read as a stand alone but I would say that it is advisable to read Battle Ground and False Flag before reading this one. That way you will have all the relevant background information on the characters and events from the previous two titles that are referenced in this book. I did enjoy this enthralling, page turner and will definitely be reading the previous two titles because this book has got me intrigued and I want to know more about the characters especially Bex and Ketty and the previous events that were referenced in this story.
AUTHOR BIO
Rachel Churcher was born between the last manned moon landing, and the first orbital Space Shuttle mission. She remembers watching the launch of STS-1, and falling in love with space flight, at the age of five. She fell in love with science fiction shortly after that, and in her teens she
discovered dystopian fiction. In an effort to find out what she wanted to do with her life, she collected degrees and other qualifications in Geography, Science Fiction Studies, Architectural Technology, Childminding, and Writing for Radio.
She has worked as an editor on national and in-house magazines; as an IT trainer; and as a freelance writer and artist. She has renovated several properties, and has plenty of horror stories to tell about dangerous electrics and nightmare plumbers. She enjoys reading, travelling, stargazing, and eating good food with good friends – but nothing makes her as happy as writing fiction.
Her first published short story appeared in an anthology in 2014, and the Battle Ground series is her first long - form work. Rachel lives in East Anglia, in a house with a large library and a conservatory full of house plants. She would love to live on Mars, but only if she’s allowed to bring her books.

Thank you, Nicki, for your review! It's great to hear that 'Darkest Hour' makes sense as a standalone - but I would definitely recommend that readers start with Books 1 and 2. The series is one long story, from Book 1 through to Book 5, and Ketty makes a lot more sense as a character if you've read Book 2. I really hope you enjoy the earlier books - Ketty might be awful, but she has her reasons, and she is *so* much fun to write! :-)
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome.Sorry about the random Woman On The Edge cover,I didn't notice that had snuck its was in..lol. I'm on the Blog tours for books 4 and 5 and am looking forward to finding out what happens next but I am also intrigued to know how Bex and Ketty`s stories began. I bet it's a lot of fun letting your evil side lose even if it is through a fictional character :-)
ReplyDeleteIt is so much fun! I adore Ketty, even though she's not a nice person. I hope you enjoy the rest of the series!
