Claudia’s voice floated over the hedge.
“Anyone there?”
He stood up and mounted the Anderson shelter. Claudia waved at him and Jacob stoked the barbecue.
“Hi, Claudia.”
“Hi. How’s it going?”
“Fine under the circumstances.”
She looked at him trying to understand what he was on about.
“Eh? Do you wanna pop over for a barbie in a little while?”
“Sure, but Penny’s not here.”
“Oh, work?”
“No, she’s gone.”
“Gone? You mean, gone... for good?”
Ray nodded and shrugged his shoulders.
“Jesus Christ!”
“Yep.”
“I’ll be over in a sec.”
Claudia vanished from sight as she ran into their house. Ten or fifteen minutes later, she knocked on the side return door. Ray opened it and there she was with a bottle of red in one hand and her keys in the other.
“I told Jacob I’d be here as much time as you needed. All day if you want.”
Then she looked down and tapped the deck with her heel.
“Hey, this is new.”
Claudia popped her things down on the table, turned towards Ray and put her arms around him, stroking the back of his neck. He let her for a while, but, as she carried on, he felt awkward so he hugged her too. Her rose water perfume engulfed him and he had a fleeting flashback to their summer together three years ago.
As the hug continued, Ray noticed her back and realised she wasn’t wearing a bra. The only time he’d known her do that was when she was sleeping with him. She wrapped that bra around her breasts as soon as they’d stopped fucking and she'd gone back to Jacob. Thinking about it, Claudia had changed before coming over. Now she had on a cropped T and knee-length pleated skirt; before she’d worn jeans and a checked shirt.
AUTHOR BIO
Leopold Borstinski is an independent author whose past careers have included financial journalism, business management of financial software companies, consulting and product sales and marketing, as well as teaching. There is nothing he likes better so he does as much nothing as he possibly can. He has travelled extensively in Europe and the US and has visited Asia on several occasions. Leopold holds a Philosophy degree and tries not to drop it too often. He lives near London and is married with one wife, one child and no pets.
