PUBLICATION DAY,BOOK REVIEW - It Was Always To by Sarah K Stephens

Morgan Kalson hasn't had a easy life, until the age of seven she had lived with her neglectful mother who was also a drug addict. After Morgan was involved in a bit and run,she was taken into care and spent the next eleven years being moved around various foster homes and care institutions. It was whilst she was in care that she met and built up a very close friendship with her best friend Annie. A friendship that has stood the test of time and the everyday dramas that life has thrown their way. Morgan has worked hard and is now a professor at Youngstown University,is in line for a promotion and is in love with a kind, caring, loving man named Justin.

Then Morgan's world is shattered into tiny pieces just like the windscreen of the car that they are riding in after Justin inexplicably decides to drive into a tree at the side of a winding road in the middle of nowhere

Justin is killed outright and because of an event that happened in her past,Morgan suddenly finds herself the number one suspecting his murder. With two dogged, relentless detectives waiting for the opportunity to arrest her and even Annie starting to doubt her version of evens,Morgan finds herself caught up in a desperate race against time to uncover the truth.

Is Morgan a killer or is she just a puppet who has unwillingly become caught up in the plans of a twisted, psychopath puppet master.

This gripping thriller is told in chapters that vary in length and is voiced entirely from Morgan's perspective. Morgan was a complex character who had some serious issues which was quite understandable considering her upbringing. I could fully understand her lack of trust and paranoia. I think all she really wanted was to feel loved which is all we all want at the end of the day. There was times when I just wanted to reach into my kindle and give her a big hug. I thought she was a very likeable character who had a wicked sense of humour and made some very witty comments throughout the story. I loved her realistic interactions with Annie, their banter and disagreements, their strive and thrive motto that gave them encouragement when life was getting them down. But was Morgan right to trust Annie or did Annie know more about what was happening than she was letting on? The other characters were a mixed bag of realistic, fully developed individuals, many of them being neither likeable or trustworthy. I didn't like the two female detectives Ormoran and Miller,I thought their treatment of Morgan was rather stereotypical and judgemental especially when they had just started investigating the case.

It Was Always You is a well written, enthralling thriller that has a number of unexpected twists and turns including a reveal that I most definitely didn't see coming. It is a riveting tale of lies, deception, manipulation, friendship, relationships and parenting that keeps the reader guessing and frantically turning the pages. This is the first book that I have read that was written by this author and it most definitely will not be my last. Very highly recommended.

Sarah K. Stephens is a developmental psychologist at Penn State University. Although Fall and Spring find her in the classroom, she remains a writer year-round. Her writing has appeared in LitHub, The Writer's Chronicle, Hazlitt, The Millions, and The Indianola Review.

Her debut novel, the psychological thriller A Flash of Red, was released in 2016. Bethanne Patrick, regular reviewer for NPR Books, NBCC Board Member, and LitHub contributing editor, noted that "Stephens offers readers a new perspective on crime psychology, enhanced by her professional expertise. Fans of books by Mary Kubica and Fiona Barton will enjoy the story of Anna Kline, her disintegrating marriage, and her very dark secrets." America’s librarian and BookLust author Nancy Pearl said that "A Flash of Red does a great job developing its three main characters; I'm still wondering what happened to them after the book ended,” and Underground Book Reviews called it “Highly recommended. . . cleverly plotted. The story itself was full of such intense intrigue and psychological manipulation that I could not put it down.”

Sarah loves using her psychological training to craft darkly human stories with killer twists. When she’s not plotting death and betrayal, she can be found enjoying the pleasures of country life with her husband and children in Central Pennsylvania.
