BOOK DESCRIPTION
They planned a dream vacation. They got a trip to hell.
Maggie and Brad are on vacation at Lake Tahoe when they meet another couple, Skye and Joe. The four hit it off so well that Maggie invites their new friends to share her beautiful lakeside rental.
What she doesn’t realize is Skye and Joe aren’t just some random couple. They have been watching Maggie and Brad, have chosen them carefully….
And now, when they discover that Maggie has a secret which could destroy her marriage, they start turning the screws, pushing their own sinister agenda. But have they chosen their victim wisely? Or does Maggie also have a dark side?
As the pressure builds, what should have been a dream vacation begins to look more like the inner circle of hell. Before it’s over all four will be changed forever – and at least one of them will be dead…
This intense thriller opens with someone describing their first encounter with a corpse and then the story continues in chapters that alternate between the perspectives of Maggie, her husband Brad and their two guests Skye and her partner Joe. They were a diverse quartet of realistic characters and I can honestly say that not one of them was very likeable or had any redeemable qualities to their character. My least favourite was Maggie for various reasons, Brad was a hypothetical, egotistical wimp,Skye was a very sly, manipulative young lady and Joe was a nasty, bullying freeloader. This is a gripping tale of self preservation, the often irreparable damage that can be caused if someone's secret falls into the hands of unscrupulous people and the lengths which some people are prepared to go to protect their secrets and also what others are prepared to do achieve the life that they believe is rightfully theirs. The plot of this story perfectly portrays the stark contrasts between the beauties of mother nature and the ugliness of some humans actions and behaviour. I loved the setting for this book, the isolated house situated near woods and on the shore of Lake Tahoe, the stunning views from the floor to ceiling windows of the lake and the mountains in the distance. I could close my eyes and imagine sitting on the deck with a cold drink and I good book, listening to the sounds of the waves crashing on the shore. Piece, relaxation and tranquillity and most definitely no house guests especially virtual strangers who I had only known for a few hours. There was also a fifth character called Daniel who appeared intermittently throughout the book but who was he and how did he fit into the story? Who was the corpse that we read about in the prologue? How many of the characters will still be alive by the time reaches its unexpected conclusion?About Cathryn Grant:
