BLOG TOUR,BOOK REVIEW - Alone In The Woods (Detective Alyssa Wyatt #3) by Charly Cox

                                                                 BOOK DESCRIPTION

The sudden appearance of a man’s booted feet had Addis snapping her mouth shut. Screaming, she kicked out at the tall, muscular guy as he dragged her from beneath the desk...

It was a scene from a horror movie; Gabriel Kensington and his wife Lydia found, brutally slain in their luxurious home in New Mexico. The frantic, whispered phone call from their teenage daughter Addis, spending the evening with best friend Emerson, quickly alerts the authorities to the killings – and worse, that the killer is still inside the house.

But when detective Alyssa Wyatt and the squad appear at the house, the unthinkable has happened – the girls are nowhere to be found.

Waking up in a dilapidated cabin, nestled high in the woods north of Albuquerque, the girls find themselves at the mercy of a brutal stranger who could take their life at any moment. While they fight for survival, it’s up to Alyssa Wyatt and her partner Cord to discover just why the Kensingtons have been targeted – and fast.

Because for Addis and Emerson, solving this mystery might just mean the difference between survival – or an unthinkable death...

Detective Alyssa Wyatt and her team find themselves caught up in a desperate race against time when they arrive at a scene of utter carnage and discover that two teenage girls have apparently been kidnapped. The complex case is made more complicated by the fact that one of the girls is the niece of Bernalillo county's district attorney Grace Burgess. Throughout the investigation the tight knit team, some of whom are still struggling to deal with what they uncovered during the shocking Toybox case will encounter more dead ends than you find would in a maze and will even begin to doubt the integrity of one of their own.

I thought the team were a really likeable group of realistic individuals,I really liked how well they worked together, the banter and camaraderie and how they cared about each other and were more like a family and not just a bunch of people who had to work together because that was their job. I loved the closeness between Alyssa and her work partner Cord Roberts and how the author added enough information about their personal lives to give the police team members dimension but not so much that it overshadowed the main story.

The reader knows the identity of the person who has abducted Addis and her best friend Emerson from quite early in the story. We also learn that this person has found themselves caught up in a far worse situation that they had been expecting and that their actions are due to a lack of control and self preservation. We also learn that their partner in crime is very cunning, devious and just a little bit psychopathic.

Interspersed throughout the book was chapters that were set in the cabin where Addis and Emerson were being held captive. These parts of the story were intense and the pages were permeated with a spine chilling sense of danger due to the ever lurking risk that the kidnapper's mysterious partner would discover the location of the cabin. The two girls were really likeable characters and it was heart warming how they supported each other throughout their ordeal.

Omg, this is a very well written, intense, intricately plotted, addictive read that had me hooked in from the first page. The story was packed full of twists and turns, red herrings and the identity of the killer was a genuinely shocking and unexpected revealation. The author has created a fantastic cast of likeable recurring characters, individuals who worm their way into the reader's heart and cause you to care about them.Although this is the third book in the Detective Alyssa Wyatt series,it can be read and enjoyed as a standalone. I haven't read the previous two titles in the series,a fact that I am going to rectify as soon as I can. A very enjoyable, edge of your seat, gripping read and very very highly recommended.
