The weekend is approaching, and the hairdressing salon is bursting with people. Above the din of the hair dryers and the animated chatter, Marianna Kravova hears her name being called from all directions around the shop floor. She rushes past the line of silver hair dryer domes, each occupied by a woman wearing a blue hairdresser's gown and with a magazine on her lap.
"Marianna, can you get another can of hairspray?"
"Marianna, can you tidy the rollers away?"
"Marianna, Mrs Horákova needs a coffee."
Thankful for a break from hours of washing hair, Marianna retreats to the kitchen at the rear of the salon and fills an old pan with water. She lights the gas hob carefully with a match and spoons ground chicory from a jar into the pan. It feels like an age to her since real coffee was available. Even the German customers can't access real coffee. The chicory substitute is better than nothing, and at least the people of Prague can still get milk and sugar in the shops.
As she sieves the brewed chicory into the cup, she hears her name being called again from the shop floor. She scuttles out with the cup on a saucer in one hand and a jug of milk in the other.
Mrs Horákova is a regular at the salon. Marianna has heard that her businessman husband has been working with the Nazis since the occupation and has become very rich. As Marianna approaches, she hears her talking loudly to the blonde hairdresser standing behind her, paused with scissors in hand.
"Sorry for the delay, Mrs Horákova," Marianna says. "Would you like m—".
Ignoring her, Mrs Horákova continues talking to the hairdresser who is weaving rollers into the customer's hair. "Moravec is a real ladies' man. He's a great role model for our young men, too, helping them to understand how much the Germans are doing for us." The hairdresser pulls a hair pin from her mouth to fix a roller into place.
"Moravec was right all along. The tensions between our countries were all down to the Jews and their greed. They infected our nation. With the Germans' help, we can clean up our country."
Marianna purses her lips. With the slightest tilt of her hand, the cup slides off the saucer she is holding and lands on the customer's lap. The hot liquid scalds through the woman's gown.
"Oh, Mrs Horákova, I'm so sorry, I—"
"You stupid girl!"
Marianna stands frozen to the spot. What on Earth have I done? – the words scream inside her head as she tries to take control of her thoughts.
"Let me sort this out, Marianna . Go home now ," the floor supervisor orders as she rushes toward the scene with a towel. "I'm so sorry Mrs Horákova. It will never happen again."
Shaking, Marianna grabs her coat from the back. As she walks through the salon to the shop door, she notices Mrs Horákova looking at her with narrowed eyes.
