BLOG TOUR, BOOK REVIEWS - Horsey Mere & The Wherryman by David Blake

                                                                 BOOK DESCRIPTION

HORSEY MERE The remains of a 17th Century witch, an MP found hanging above a five-pointed star, and three girls with powers beyond anyone's control. As DI Tanner and DS Evans endeavour to make plans for their big day, the chance discovery of Norfolk's last known witch, tried and hanged by Norfolk’s infamous Witchfinder General, sparks a chain of the most horrific events, none of which Tanner seems able to stop.

The discovery of the body of a local MP in his home and in mysterious circumstances launches Detective Inspector John Tanner and his team into a complex case involving politics, witchcraft, self preservation, violence and revenge. A case that has more dead ends than a maze, numerous suspects, will push Tanner to the brink and have tragic consequences for the close knit team.

I thought Tanner was a wonderful character, I loved his wicked, dry sense of humour that also had a added dash of sarcasm, he caused to laugh out loud a number of times as the story unfolded. I loved the banter and camaraderie between Tanner and his fiance DS Jenny Evans, I also enjoyed the battle of wits between Tanner and his boss DCI Forrester. The team were a mixed bag of realistic individuals who worked really well together and I loved the way that they remained loyal to Tanner when the duel investigations and his life went south.

I loved how the author incorporated the history of the area that the book was set in and events that are prevalent in the modern day into the plot of this enthralling story. I also loved the sinister and creepy atmosphere in the area where the single Hawthorne tree was situated in the edge of Horsey Mere. A tree which played a integral part in the events of the past and present day.

Horsey Mere is a very well written, captivating read that is written in short, snappy chapters, many of which ended in a way that gave the reader a very bad case of just one more chapter syndrome. It has a cast of vivid, realistic characters, some likeable, some not so likeable.Although this is the 5th book in the series,it can be read and enjoyed as a standalone. I thought this was a extremely enjoyable read and in the strength of this book,I plan on reading the previous titles in the series.

Four missing children, three murdered men, and the helm of a boat with a blood-red sail, hiding a secret only he can tell.

Returning to the Broads after nearly two years at sea, Tanner moors up next to a boat to find the body of a man whose five-year-old daughter is nowhere to be seen. As a torrent of unwanted memories begins flooding through his mind, an attractive Broads Ranger arrives at the scene with a disturbing tale; one of children being taken by a ghostly figure, standing at the helm of an old wooden boat.
