BLOG TOUR, BOOK REVIEW - The Lost Hours by Susan Lewis

                                                                 BOOK DESCRIPTION

A perfect marriage…

Golden couple Annie and David Crayce have it all. A loving marriage, three beautiful children and a thriving family business. Life couldn’t be better. Until the unthinkable happens…

A perfect crime?

A piece of damning DNA evidence has arisen, placing David as the prime suspect of a murder committed twenty-years ago. Annie is sure her David is innocent. But if he isn’t guilty, then either his father or brother must be.

As the police investigate the cold case, so does Annie. Trawling through her old diaries, she begins desperately looking for answers. But it all comes down to a few lost hours she can’t solve.

And Annie begins to doubt the one person she thought she knew best… Her husband.

Lifestyles of the rich and the.....not so perfect.

Annie and her handsome husband David were the golden couple, they lived a lavish lifestyle, their home was a concerted, rambling old New England - style villa situated on the moors of Exmoor. They had three perfect children,a tight knit family and their business was thriving. Like many couples, they had experienced issues in the past but their marriage had survived and was strong, full of love and laughter.

But now, Annie's perfect world has been blown apart and scattered into the breeze, just like the clay pigeons that their clients paid large amounts of money to blow to smithereens on David's shooting ranges. The police had suddenly forced their way into the couple's luxurious home and carted David away in handcuffs. It transpires that they suspended David of committing a horrific crime, twenty years ago, seventeen year old Karen Lomax had been brutally murdered. The police are saying that new evidence has come to light which links David to the crime. Annie insists that her beloved husband is innocent and begins her own investigation into events of the past. But what she uncovers plus the damning evidence and the uneasy feeling that David and his family are harbouring secrets plunges Annie into a unfamiliar world of doubt, confusion and mistrust. David is a kind and caring, a loving man, he couldn't have been involved in the murder of a girl who was only year older that their own daughter.....could he?

This beautifully descriptive story is narrated predominantly from the perspective of Annie. She was a vivid character, who despite admiring her loyalty to her husband and having empathy with and understanding her conflicting emotions, I can't say I thought was a very likeable character. Although, I did alter my opinion of her a tiny bit by the end of the story. I can't say that I liked Annie's sister in law Julia very much for various reasons or a character called Chrissie. I thought that Annie and David's three children Max, Sienna and Quin were very realistic characters who each had their own unique personality and character traits.

Interspersed throughout the book was chapters that covered the investigation into Karen's murder. The officer who was in charge of the investigation was a Detective Sergeant Natalie Rundle, a character who,I can't say that I liked very much at times. She had a turbulent backstory  which may or may not have affected the way that she handled the investigation.

Some of the scenes in this book were beautifully described, the grey, desolate atmosphere in the moor during a rain storm and the beauty and stillness after snow has fallen. Throughout the story, the author found clever ways to perfectly portray the stark differences between the beauty of nature and the ugliness of the behaviour of some humans.

The Lost Hours is a beautifully written, tightly plotted, captivating, character driven story that keeps the reader guessing and has some a number of unexpected twists and revelations. It's a tale of families, deception, jealousy, judgement, class divides and forgiveness that has a cast of diverse, believable characters. I thought this was a very enjoyable, enthralling read and I would happily read more of this author's books in the future.
