BLOG TOUR, BOOK REVIEW - The Price by Kerry Kaya

                                                                 BOOK DESCRIPTION

Break the rules…

Harry Fletcher – Fletch to his friends – has spent his life surviving the tough streets of the East End. He knows working for notorious gangster Billy King is dangerous, and sleeping with Billy’s beautiful wife, Susan is deadly…but rules are meant to be broken.

Pay the price.

If Billy discovers the affair, Fletch is a dead man. But the closer he gets to Susan the more reckless Fletch becomes. And soon, Fletch realises that every one - even him - must pay the price for his actions.

But just what is Fletch prepared to lose…and will the cost be too high, even for him?

The plot of this dark and gritty gangland thriller centres around Henry (Fletch) Fletcher and his younger brother Spencer who find themselves drawn into the world of easy money, drugs and turf wars after they start working for local Kingpin Billy King. Having escaped a violent, abusive father when they were younger just to find themselves living with their equally abusive uncle, violence was nothing new in the young men's lives. Fletcher had hoped that by working for King their lives might finally start to improve for the better. But the world that they have entered is a violent world of backstabbing, deception, betrayal and revenge. When Albie Bannerman who is the brother of George, the kingpin of a rival firm is murdered it is the catalyst for a deadly game is chess between the two factions which will result in blood shed, violence and death in both sides. George is a very nasty individual who was prepared to do everything in his power to discover what had happened to his brother no matter who gets hurt in the process.

Meanwhile, Fletch is dealing with issues of the romantic kind, he is madly in love with Billy's wife Susan despite knowing exactly what Billy would do to them both if he ever found out about their affair. Fletch has also found himself trapped by a scheming young lady called Tina who saw him as a meal ticket into a life of money and glamour and had used the oldest trick in the book to trap him. Feeling pressure from all sides, Fletch is close to breaking point, what will happen when he finally snaps? Who will still be standing when the smoke from the battle clears? How high a price is he prepared to pay to achieve his after ever after with the woman he loves?

The chapters were written from the perspectives of numerous vivid characters including Fletch,Spencer,Billy,Susan and narcissistic George. I thought that Fletch was a fantastic character, a realistic blend of fledgling gangster and vulnerable young adult who started out just trying to do his best for his mum and brother. I loved how protective he was of his family but there was also times when he came across as just as bad as his uncle and not very likeable. My knowledge of gangland bosses only extends to what I have seen in tv but from I do know, Billy acted like a typical kingpin who liked to control people using violence and intimidation and was a major hypocrite who had absolutely no respect for women including his own wife Susan. The story had quite a large cast of diverse, realistic individuals, some likeable, some not so likeable but unlike some books that have a large cast of characters this fast paced thriller was very easy to follow and understand.

The Price is a extremely well and intelligently written, dark, gritty and at times harrowing insight into the world of gangs in London in the 1990s that had me hooked in and glued to my kindle from the first page. As you would expect from this type of story , there is quite a lot of violence but the descriptions and scenes weren't overly graphic or uncomfortable to read. I would love to watch a film or tv mini series about Fletch and his life of crime and I hope the author plans to revisit his again in the future. A very enjoyable, thrilling read and very very  highly recommended.
